My grass field is mostly bracken fern. The soil is very sandy and gravelly, still rolling like the glacier left it.
I rototilled a patch 40' x 200' and planted rye and clover. Some sprouted, but then the ferns came back twice as thick.
The MSU extension service fellow said that round-up and most herbicides won't kill ferns.
The field is to rolling and pitted to mow with a lawn mower.
Any suggestions?

Lindsey if this is the same ferns we have only way I've found out is to invest in a good pair of gloves and go for it. Spray the edges with spectride (sp) weed killer like round up. You will have to repeat this a few times. This will hope to keep them down to a workable bunch. good luck.......marty

You should get a soil test, you probably
need to lime. Once we limed and kept working
up the ground, ferns dissapeared. Ferns get
6 to 8 ins. you can take bed springs and
a 4-wheeler to kill them.
