I am the latest unfortunate member in the mud puppy club. I have never seen one and knew very little about them. Man that is one ugly critter. Got the little freak just north of the 80" mill in front of the barge turnaround. It hit a jig, grub, minnow rig.

Maybe we should have people take pictures of them next to a ruler and give a prize to the person who catches the biggest one. (catch and release of course).
Who knows, Maybe it would do wonders toward making people appreciate them more.
I can see it now, "The Woodhaven Mud Puppy Festival"
There would be parade's, and people in Mud Puppy Costumes, etc....

Why not have a "Mud Puppy Festival"!
When I was stationed at Ft. Rucker Alabama, we had an annual "Beat The Chaplin" cockroach competition. It was a great success!:D
It cost one dollar to enter, and whoever had a larger cockroach than the Chaplin won a prize!

Catch ,your on to something! we can start a Calander " my mud puppy and me". Get some hot Models crawling accross the sand with a mud puppy crawling accross the models belly. Once the fad hits , there would be no stopping it. lol

MudPuppy is a waterdog, salamander that is starting to become rare is some waters.
Sheepshead are freshwater drum, they are one of the only fish that eat the zebra mussles and are growing in numbers.

I have caught a few sheephead and find them to give a good fight. Much better than the fight that I get from a mud puppy. I was down in Florida this winter. The Sheephead there have big giant buck teeth and are actually quite tasty and sought after.
I have caught several mudpuppies while ice fishing in Lake St. Clair. They generally scare off the other fish. You can usually catch them with a minnow or wax worm right on the bottom near to where they are. You're right about them being slimy though and they have no texture so they are very difficult to get off the hook.
I even went fishing with someone on this forum who absolutely refused to take it off his own hook and I had to rescue him. That didn't stop him from having a little fun at my expense with a previous post but I'll just leave it at that.

I was Ice Fishing in Upper Straits Lake this winter and saw one in about 14' of water. We watched him and I admit did try catching him for 15 minutes til he crawled out of sight. Weirrrdddd lookin things!

I go to Florida every year the last week of Feb, first week of March to target the sheephead spawn. Awesome fighting fish and very tasty. Most of the saltwater fish have dentures, but sheephead teeth look alot like ours.
