I was thinking about getting there at about 1 or 2 to get in the "prime" area, but will probably stay til about 12 or so...

IFN where are you setting up? Same spot or towards the bridge? May try to make it up again with the warmer weather and no gale force winds. Take care.~~~~~~~~~~><> AL

Oh yea, IFN what diameter are the clamps you used on the rod holder you made? Your's worked real nice so I think I'll have to make up a couple this week. Thanks in advance.~~~~~~~><> AL

Yeah Mike same spot or near the cube. I might be able to make it, I'll have to blow off school but it'll be worth it.

04-14-2003, 05:21 PM
I was thinking closer towards the cube. where those guys were passed out in the shanty. I will have the shanty with me, to block the wind, and to do a little grilling, still have alot of dogs left!!!!

AL D., I used 2" clamps, the ones I got were from work but I'm sure that muffler clamps will work. I got the wingnuts from Dammans.

I can't make it thursday my brother's band is having there first gig that night. US-12 in Wayne at 10 if anyone is interested. Its a cover band and he's the singer. They do newer rock. Anyways is that the only night you have open? I can go Friday.

I just checked the weather and we are supposed to get some rain in the middle of the week! Saturday could be a good day for a smelt "run". But hey... don't ask me.... I've never even caught a smelt and have been trying for 2 years!!!

04-14-2003, 06:02 PM
I suppose that we could change the date... I was just thinking that there might not be as many people there Thursday.....

Tattoo Mike
04-14-2003, 06:17 PM
If you don't want to change that's OK but I can only Friday.

AL D.
04-15-2003, 08:47 AM
IFN, thanks for the info. Can't make it Thurs. either. We'll see how the weather looks this weekend. If we are not walleye fishing, Fri. or Sat. might be an option. Good reason to get out and eat and drink like kings again. Keep me posted. Thanks, ~~~~~><> AL:D

I just saw the weather rain Fri. Sat. Sun. If it doesn't change I'll be out Fri. or Sat. Rain = less people more smelt.

AL D.
04-15-2003, 10:31 AM
Ed, are you thinking of hitting the same area? If so let me know we can do a repeat of last Sat. I know a place (Swissel inn) that has a great walleye dinner for 7 bucks also good ribs pizza etc... We can meet there and eat then head to the wall. Other options are the feeder creeks/streams north of Pt. Huron. I know several locations up there but we will need waders. I'll keep contact with the local boys up there for reports through out the week. Take care~~~~~~~~~~><> AL:confused:

depends on the rain. and the amount of people with nets in the water already . If rain i'm thinking of fishing more towards the bridge so i can sit in the car to stay dry. the Smelt shoud be all along the wall and running on top.

Friday or Sat would work for me. I was just told last night that I "might" have to work Fri, Sat, and Monday. Which for non midnight people = Thurs, Fri, and Sun nights... Will know for sure tonight when I get in.....

AL D.

ice fishin nut
04-15-2003, 07:36 PM
The spot doesnt matter to me, just as long as we get some!!!! Havent brought any home in the past 2 years!!!:(

If I dont get any this weekend, I might just throw that net back and go trolling for another one;)

Hay all! Can someone PM with some info about the cube, the wall and the bridge in this post? Where are these places? Can you give me directions? Best time to be dipping? (9pm-4am?) Will my traditional 12' dipping net work there?

I'll supply the food if some of you want to meet there sometime next week.

thanks,

Fridays forecast calls for rain and temps in the low 30's, Sat. forecast clear skies and temps in the 40's. Sat would be better for me. I'll see JUMBO, Sturge, and Big Bob tonight at the walleye meeting and see what they think. I will also call my buddies in the thumb to see what is happening up that way. ~~~~><> AL:D

Got a report from P.H. this morning, they got alot of smelt Wed. pm by the bridge. Also several kings caught off the wall at pinegrove park. Looks like we will be able to head up on Sat. afternoon. I'v alwys fished smelt by the bridge, the first parking lot. There is less of a croud. I normally walk towards the dridge where the wall has a slight bend . or the last parking lot before the park. In that spot I normally walk towards the park a little and fish near the bench. But i am open to suggestions.

hey, thats pretty cool, i haven't seen much coming out of there for years and years. Glad you guys got into em, i'm gonna either have to fashion a net myself or buy one of them contraptions from somebody, a hoop net just doesn't do it over in PH sometimes.

The hardest part was getting rid of some old drunk guy wanting to beat us up and snag our beer. No Port Huron smelt exerience would be complete without it!!! LOL!!!

Sturge

Sorry I missed your outing, sounds like you got into a few Smelt. I have been checking with the boys fishing the Sturgeon over in CANADA and they are running a blank to date. It should pick up around the first of May and continue through early Aug.
I would be happy to take anyone that is interested in catching a old log that Flys.
Went with Big Bob Sat. and the water was like pure Pea Soup out of the Clinton and on down to Ginos, we stopped by Spillway
Metro beach and out to the 10.5 debth. Nada. It would have been better to eat well and savor the nector vs chasing the ghost. Will see everyone next weekend at the tournament.
Good Catching!
Tom

Ed, good job on the smelt. Hit the river with JUMBO on Sat. and we got 4 nice fish. (red #114 can) Just too tired after bobbing around in the river all afternoon. Next weekend is our 1st. club derby so getting the boat ready was the #1 priority. I'll keep you guys up to date on the smelt action up there if I get reports. Maybe plan an outing the 1st weekend in May around Lexington or Port Sanilac. Take care~~~~~~~~~~~~~~><> AL:cool:

Mike both nets were on the top. I was in the last parking lot just down river of the bridge. If you go to the wall and look you will see a little inditation or bend). At night there are also two lights out at the bend. Kramer and myself walked the whole rail and the best we saw was not much. PM me if you need a better location
