True story. Last fall I was helping a friend of mine hang a tree stand way back in a swamp. After finding a nice spot halfway up a cedar I offered to hang it in as the owner is a little skittish about heights. Once there, I sat in as he cleared some shooting lanes and I directed sight lines. Directly in front of me about 8' was a dead stick about 5" diameter, with the swampy ground I questioned wether it would push over. It broke off right at the base but became lodged in some other tops. A gray squirrel rapidly emerged from the dead stem in a very agitated state. The squirrel started running down the trunk and I yelled for my friend to give him some room, well the squirrel saw him and reversed direction before he could move. He took a perch about 15' above me, looking right at me and chattering loudly. I was looking down and pointing at him (also laughing) when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw him launch. I started to duck immediately. He landed right on top of my head and peeled my knit cap clean off. My buddy said I didn't touch the top 2 rungs of the ladder and I felt very fortunate to not have my face disfigured. Despite a standing offer to hunt that stand I never went back. Beware of squirrel.
