Went to Chippewa lake this past Saturday (13th.). Walked out from public access at 7:00am for approx. 250 yards to slightly left of center from landing. Maggots on tear drops at 18 feet and proceeded to land over 110 gills in the next 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, 99% were under 5" !!! Typical. Talked with several guys and the walleye bite there had begun to taper off, perch (6 -7.25" ave. ) were beginning to pick up on wigglers and minnows but we did not have a strike on minnows while we were there for a total of three hours. 100 people were strung out all over the west bay of the lake fishing for everything from gills to crappie, pike (hammer handles) were hitting too but were running 17" - 20". Didn't stay till dark or after to try the crappie but heard they were hitting "OK". Try again for me on another day.

I've never fished Chippewa Lake, but have pretty good luck on Jensen Lake which is in Mecosta county also.....near the Martiny chain. Always come home with a nice meal or two.....and occasionally limit out on panfish. The bluegills and sunfish are extremely plentiful in this fertile lake....with lots of small ones......5 to 6 inchers. And if you can find them some real nice ones typically 7 to 8 inchers. I did catch one 10 inch sunfish already this winter so there are a few big ones. And the perch are plentiful in the 6 to 7 inch range with a few jumbos. We've gotten only two keeper pike this winter so far and twice as many undersized.....so you do have to sort what you catch, but the action's pretty consistent.

Hey guys, I've fished both lakes you are refering to. The two years I spent up there, the best lake I fished on was Clear Lake on M-20 out of Big Rapids. There is a forty foot hole at the west portion of the lake, with a good fish finder you will get some dandy crappie at dark.
