Hello sportspeople.

My wife and I took our son to Bass Pro Shops on Sunday for the Spring Fishing Classic. We walked around for a bit and my son spotted that machine that you put a penny in and it runs it through some rollers to form in into a BPS logo or another design.
When it came out a light went on in my head. I thought, "Hey that looks like a small lure". So I dug into my pocket and pulled out some more change and did three for me. :) I headed over to the hook aisle and picked up some small trebles (#6 is all I could find but they could probalby be a little smaller) and a bag of split rings.

I got home and went right to the drill press to try it out. I just popped a hole in each end of the now reformed penny. Then just added the split ring and hook. I don't know how well they'll work. (They're not very heavy so they probably won't cast well) But I'm thinking maybe for Crappie or something on an ultralight setup. Heck, maybe even tipped with a small minnow next winter. :) Here's a pic :

I'll let you know how they work !

they look like a great lure for ice browns/steelies. Light, shiny, and will flutter nicely. Great idea!

They look more like spinner blades...

ISS,

Yeah I never thought of that. I guess you could use them for that too.

Great seeing a fellow fisherman who likes to tinker. Neat idea!!!

Just wanted to add, if you want a different action later on (and you may not), you could always take the reformed penny and place it into the bowl of a fairly sturdy tablespoon and tap gently with a ball peen hammer to achieve a spoon shape, giving the familiar but effective side to side waggle that is so effective.

Happy tinkering and Good Fishing, Mac

They'd be even more effective in Canadian waters because of the exchange rate! :D

Where would this machine be located in BPS??? I've been in there several times and have never seen it.

Ruler,

There's one up front near the exit. (right by the checkout) And there's another one back near the fish tank. It's on the East side of the tank right near that big viewing bubble.

Great idea!
I happen to have a penny sitting on my computer that I did the same thing to...only at Cabela's. Did it for the heck of it and it's just been sitting here ever since. I'm gonna put a little bend in it, maybe some reflective tape, since it's a bit tarnished and throw a small treble on it. It also might make a unique homemade in line spinner...not something you would find in everybodies tackle box. Do you remember what it cost to have done, I know at Cabela's it cost more than just the penny but can't remember what.
Anyway, something fun to try. It's amazing how the simple things can keep us amused!

How about putting a couple together and then putting on the hardware. This would then send out a little rattling sound as it goes through the water.

You could also add a treble hook dressed with hackle or a single hook dressed with a twister tail or some other type of plastics. it would give it a bit more weight to cast and add a little more action.

Swamp Monster.

It costs .51 total. (.50 for the machine and the penny you devour :))

That is a good idea. Maybe a little "bucktail" or something on the treble would look cool too. I'll experiment and post my results.

I think someone mentioned it, but those might be good as ice fishing jigs, like flutter spoons...
