The biggest smallmouth I ever caught came on a six inch sucker under a tipup on the Hodenpyle dam backwater on the Big Manistee. It was out of season so I put it back (I probably wouldn't have kept it, anyway) but it sure was a beautiful fish, not a mark on it. I figured it was seven pounds or a little more.

I have caught many bass on tip ups over the years many of them are in the 5lb and up. I notice if I go a hour north or south of home the numbers seem to drop way down for me. There are so many bass in the lakes around home here it is amazing. I have only managed 5 pike this year all keepers but looking through my journal here 57 bass on tip-ups alone this ice season. I fished horsehead lake earlier this season for eyes and landed 7 in 1 evening. I seem to be a magnet to them this winter.

On March 1st 2003 I caught four pike and one large mouth bass all keepers. The funny thing was that we had five tip-ups out,one per angler and all the game fish just came to my tip-up.I think I'll keep my secret it's more fun that way!Oh by the way I returned the pike and bass to the lake to be caughted again!

Still fishing in my shanty (close enough to a tipup) I pulled up a 24" largie a month ago. It literally flew out of the hole and landed in my lap. Scared the crap out of the two of us in my small shanty. Then I noticed that I didn't even hook it, it was just pissed off enough that it mouthed my minnow hard and wouldn't let go... at least until it saw me. Then it opened it's mouth and plopped to my feet.
I love it when you don't even have to worry about injuring it, so it swam away healthy.

Teampolarisracing, the first bass I ever caught on a tip up was on Horsehead. If I can find the pic I'll post it. If I remember right it was 21" and I think it went something like 5#.
PS. If any of you guys who frequent the Remus/Mecosta area, if you are around of Fridays, St.Mikes just west of Remus has a killer all you can eat fish fry until Good Friday. $7.50 all you can eat cod and walleye, 4:30 till 7:00.
