Camping fees expected to increase

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission today directed Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff to prepare a new camping fee structure that will meet financial needs of the state parks system.

The directive came on the heels of Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm?s budget presentation Thursday to the state Legislature, in which the Governor recommended shifting state parks funding to a user fee-based structure by removing all general fund appropriations to parks. The shift will save the state?s General Fund nearly $8.5 million next year and help address Michigan?s projected $1.7 billion budget deficit.

State Park vehicle permit prices are set by the legislature. Camping fees are set by the Natural Resources Commission. The Legislature is expected to review a proposal to raise daily vehicle fees by $2, and annual vehicle fees by $4.

?This shift will help the State Parks by putting them on the same user-funded financial structure as hunting and fishing programs,? said DNR Administrative Services Deputy Kelli Sobel. ?This move addresses the state?s immediate funding challenge.?

The NRC adopted its Land Use Subcommittee?s recommended policy to guide the DNR as it reviews land holdings. For the past year, the subcommittee has worked with DNR staff and constituent groups to review state land ownership strategies and offer policy improvements. The new Commission policy offers a framework for DNR staff to complete their comprehensive review of the state?s landholdings. The subcommittee will now work with staff and constituent groups to develop strategies ensuring public lands meet the natural resource and recreational needs of Michigan residents and visitors, today and in the future.

NRC Chairman Keith Charters announced to the Commission his resignation as the NRC representative to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board. The Board administers the MNRTF, which uses royalties from the state?s gas and oil leases to purchase lands for recreational values. Charters has served on the MNRTF Board for 11 years. At his recommendation, the board named Commissioner Bob Garner of Cadillac to represent the NRC to the MNRTF Board. As a former legislative aid, Garner was instrument in crafting the legislation that created the MNRTF in 1976 and further laws in 1984 that constitutionally protect the Fund.

The next regular NRC meeting is April 10-11 in Lansing.

i can appreciate paying a fee to have these parks, launches, campgrounds etc open and clean with available restrooms. the thing i do not like is the fact that there are so many different permits needed. I DO NOT WANT 3,4, OR 5 STICKERS IN MY TRUCK WINDOW.

i was in fishermans headquarters on dec 30 or 31 and a couple of guys come in and want launch stickers for highbridge rd. they were not available yet to the shops. if the guys wanted the sticker they had to go back to baldwin to the forrestry service. b/s. how many different stickers do we need?

I'm all for buying and paying for using the state and federal lands but didn't we pass legislation recently directing certain monies to the state parks? I'm drawing a complete blank on this but I seem to remember something on the ballot in the last 5 years directed to the parks.

It is hard to make a case against State Parks being supported soley by user fees. But I have to agree, why so many stickers? One sticker should cover all state parks and boat ramps. Between Federal, State, Metro, & County Parks, Off road use, and boat ramp stickers, it is amazing I don't get tickets for obstructed vison. Simply combining all the state stickers would help, perhaps a different color code as to weather or not their are ramp privledges etc?

I don't mind increases but the percentage increase is what gets me. a $4 increase on the annual permit is roughly a 20% increase. Annual increases on the order of a few percent equate to about $1 or less per year. To me this wouldn't be a problem and would keep the books balanced more consistently.

Is it correct that this year the park vehicle permits are transferrable between vehicles? That's good news if this is true.

Ahhhh, State forest's. Camp for free, move after 14 days to another spot in the 750,000 acre campground. No stickers, no stinking badges, just you and a Mi state placard to register your campsite.:D

I bought an annual park permit the other day. I suppose now I will have to buy another, like when they increase the price of a stamp & put it beside the one I have now? I've also reserved sites at campgrounds for the summer with my credit card. I wonder if they will conact me to give me the option to cancel without having to pay a cancellation fee? Not that I want to, though. I think they should have these types of things worked out before the new year to avoid these types of problems.
