Hi everyone, I hope someone can help. We have been looking on ebay at some older flashers. (and no I don't mean dirty old men). I am interested in knowing how sensitive these older units are compaired to the Vexilar or the Zercom. I know on these newer models are sensative enough to pick up you lure and was wondering how the older styles compaired. We would love to have a Vexilar but money is a real consideration right now.. Any input would be greatly appreciated..
John has been fishing pretty hard but isn't having much luck..How is everyone else doing?
Thanks again....Love the site

You might try Humminbirds Web site. The have, or did have some units that have been rebuilt. The price looked good. Any thing that I have purchased from a manufacture that has been rebuilt, has a warranty the same as a new one. Take a look. WWW.Humminbird.com

Sassy,
I have an old Fish lo-k-tor by lowrance, it was my grandpas and it works good. It doesn't have the seperation that a Vexilar or Zercom has, and no color, but they work. Especially if you are short on cash. But I would rather use my Zercom colorpoint anyday, you can see the 'eyes come right up off the bottom and check out you bait. Good Luck

I gave one of those too icefishin nut last year bolo. Sat in my garage for years. They definatly don't have all the bells and whistles the vexliar has but in a money pinch they work great
;) .
As far as my luck this year sasy it has been average. Not my best year forsure but also not the worst.
You might also find some good deals in the papers on vexliars. people who are updating too a fl18 sometimes sell there fl8 pretty cheap.
good luck

Used a green box for years before these new fangled units came out. Not quite as sensitive as the newer units, couldn't pickup small jigs in deeper water but it certainly would show the bottom and the fish. The units generally had to be rigged for use with a motor cycle battery as the lantern batteries they where designed to work with didn't last long in the cold. I would imagine they would work fine rigged with gel batteries.

I was in the same 'boat/ as you earlier in the season. Wanted a flasher but could not justify the expense of a Vex or Color Point. So I bought a Zercom Clearwater Classic that was set up for ice fishing.
It is great! It has 2.5" seperation, not as good as today's new models. But better than the old style flashers. Uses the same type battery as the new models. There is no color, but it does have three levels of grey scale. This is an LCD flasher, it does not drain the battery at all. There is a back light for night use.
I can see a small tear drop & wax worm in 30 fow (that's as deep as I've used it).
There is a similar unit on e-Bay, it is a Clearwater Pro model (not sure of the difference).
Clearwater Pro on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2715055505&category=29723)
Seems like a good alternative between the 'OLD' style flashers and the High tech ones.

Hi guys, thanks for all the information. I visited the hummingbird site. They didn't have a lot right now but I will keep an eye on it..I also went to the vexilar site and they have reconditioned ones too....
The zercom on ebay looks good too. I have a bid in on it and am watching it close.
The greenbox just doesn't sound like what I am looking for. But that was a lot of good information..
Just want to say thanks again for everyones input... And Chad, keep up the good work...:D
