Well folks, I really haven't gotten out as much as I had hoped to but it looks like at this point MY SEASON IS OVER. Looks like we'll have decent ice for a while longer but I won't be able to take advantage of it. :(
I just got back from the doctor. I've gotta wear a knee brace and I'm not supposed to kneel at all. The X-rays were negative but he said he's not convinced that I didn't fracture my patela. If it's not cleared up in about 2 weeks, I've gotta go for a "Bone Scan" he said. (I think it's basically an MRI)
I hope the rest of you enjoy the rest of the season.
Catch a few for me !

Man sounds like you are having a rough time! Take care of yourself and get well soon.
My mother-in-law just fell and broke her arm bone--split it 10". Ouch!

jpollman,
Take care of yourself. Get well soon.Is there any thing saying that you need a crutch or anything like that, to keep pressure off of you knee?

Thanks guys.
At least I don't need a crutch. It really isn't too painful to just walk. But I've got to keep the leg as straight as possible. Also, I don't think I'd want to chance slipping on the ice and falling AGAIN. That would hurt MUCH worse than the first time I'm sure.
I'll just stay off of it and start organizing my tackle boxes for open water . :) It isn't that far off ya know !

Howdy, John-
Sorry to hear about your knee. Had mine 'scoped in '99; it's surprising how painful and debilitating a knee injury can be.
My best advice is listen to the doc, and don't rush things. Knees take quite a while to improve......
I had a little "cut n paste" job done last week. I have to wear a brace, but things have improved a lot in only a week. Pain is gone.:) Surgery only took about 40 minutes. Now a broken Patella sounds a bit more serious, I sure hope it isn't that. Best wishes John.

I fractured my patella about 15 years ago.
Never had anything done to it except X-rays. Mine fractured right in half, vertically.
Doc said, surgery was really not needed, he thought it would heal by itself.
Evidently it did, cause it never really bothers me. My tendons and ligaments are a different story though, those bother me sometimes when I walk.
I'm amazed everyday by the human body! The amount of "torture" we put it through! And it keeps gettin' out bed everyday, with out fail.
PS, patella = knee cap ,,,,,, right?
PSS, sorry for startin' the avalanche of humor,on you're auger idea post, I took one look at that and decided it couldn't go without saying.:) (jpollman)

Now you can't let a little knee brace stand between you and some great late year ice fishing..especially if there's time off work involved. There's no reason you have to kneel that I can think of - sure it helps when you're setting tip ups, but you could probably do just as well sitting on a bucket with your leg extended. Throw some cleats on the bottom of your boots for added stability - and you're in business. If you're dragging much equipment out on the ice, it's just time to find a husky fishing partner. In the words of Steve (From Blue's Clues [yes, I have a toddler] "Don't give up, Just go on...") Good luck man!

Seen a long handled ice scoop at Lakeside in SCS, don't have to kneel down! I would get yourself a camp chair with the foot rest built in and go to town! Of course I was out on crutches at last ice too one year after breaking my leg skiing. Probably wouldn't do that now. Hope your knee heals up soon, those knee injurys aren't fun:( After 16 years of rigging, doc says mine are going to need a rebuild in another 3 years or so. No fun getting old.

John,
sorry to hear about your "bum" knee. I've been nursing mine since I've been around 8 yrs old. Messed up in little league. And this winter has been a "doozey" - missed some good fishing weekends.
I've been in for x-rays upon x-rays, bone scans, you name it and have seen a multitude of so-called "specialists". I have been able to avoid exploratory surgery and live with my "trick knee" and pain throughout the years. It comes and goes. Hypercompressions and hyperextensions seem to really kick it into gear.
They "think" it's some kind of roughening on the underside of my knee cap that I keep agitating - called something like patellascrewedupkneeosis ... who knows - I live with it.
Glad to hear that they think they know what's wrong with yours John. Good luck and take care.

Good luck John, I think I would stay off the ice too, one slip could get ugly. Two years ago I broke my leg and I wasn't much fun. By the way my wife is a MRI Tech and she said a bone scan is actually a nuclear medicine scan. They inject you with a radioactive medicine then scan it. She said nothin' to it. You know thats what they all say. Good Luck Bolo

Hey John!
I got an extra sled - me and Jigworm can pull you out to "the pighole" with us! Let me know if you're up for it! If not, heal up fast - I'll say a prayer to help out. You can come out in the boat whenever you want this Spring. Later
