Went to Simcoe this weekend. We got a late start because of a proir commitment by a buddy of mine. We arrived at 5:30 Saturday evening. Because of the time, we didn't want to take the time to unload the quad and pack up all the gear. So, I figured I would go straight to Georgina Island, grab some bait and drive out in the truck to catch the evening bite. Well, there was no bait. They were out. Nearest spot was in Sutton. So we blew off the evening fish and did a little scouting for Sunday. All reports I got was that noone was doing well.

Sunday morning, we headed out to Cooks bay off Roches Point. I talked to a group of 5 guys from the Saginaw area that said on Saturday morning the only had 3 perch between the five of them. But they had done so-so there on Saturday late afternoon ending up with around 50 between all five of them.
It took us 30 minutes to get a mile out because there was a consistent 12" of snow on the ice with alot of 2 foot plus drifting. Fished that area all morning and not a nibble. Thank god for the power auger. LOL.
The MNR stopped by doing a creel survey. I asked him if this was some kind of a cruel joke? I answered all his questions and I then said "Pretty Pathetic Aye?" He said nope, check this out. He then showed me the results of his creel survey. Thirty sheets of nothing but Zeros. This is not an individual survey either, it was a group survey. (ie 5 people..........Zero fish) :(

At about noon, it was 34 degrees and the wind started kicking a little bit, so I tied the shanty down. Thirty minutes later, the temp dropped to 12 degrees and the winds were about 25 MPH. Nice whiteout, GPS is in the truck and the shanty is like a freakin' wind sock.
So, my buddies were pressuring me to pack it in and we did.

On the way home, a road crew closed down westbound 402 about 90 miles from Sarnia because of blowing and drifting. I didn't want to spend 2 hours in traffic, so I was forced to do a little creative ditch jumping that got us back onto 402 west. The road ahead was bad. Drifts across the road, ice and multiple accidents. One 8 car pileup, a jack-knifed semi and a few rollovers.
We made it to the bridge in time and we beat alot of traffic.
Stopped at duty free for some booze and we find out that one of the guys with us lost his wallet and doesn't have his birth certificate. Great. But, we made through customs and they didn't ask for it so that was cool.

That's the extent of that trip.

Holy crap John!......and I thought my trip was bad. Well, at least you made it home safely. Simcoe is a long way to travel into Canada this time of year and road conditions are always risky. I'm surprised that the fishing has not picked up yet.

Time to hit the rivers eh.

I know quite a few people that fish Simcoe regularly and have yet to hear a "decent" report from anyone. Some have gotten a few, maybe 30 -60 fish, FOR THE GROUP !, but nothing that would make me go for it over there. Simcoe obviously has a large number of great Perch to fish for and "usually" you can get into them, but good ! This year has been fairly poor for the fishing over there, don't feel bad, not many people have done much better !

A group of 10 of my friends just got back. They fished Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and a half day on Sunday. All of them had anywhere from 40-75 fish, but they really had to work for them with the ice/snow conditions. One thing they did say was that these were the biggest fish they have ever pulled out of Simcoe. (Been going for 9 years) My one friend pulled a 15 1/2", 14 7/8" and a 14 1/4" in a row out of the same hole. Yes all 3 are getting mounted. They put over 35 miles on their quads trying to locate the fish and ended up about 5 miles out of Sibbald point on the west side of Georgina Island. These guys usually throw back the those football size perch but thats all they were catching. Average size was 12"....A couple other old timers I know have been quietly taking all of their fish, usually on mid week trips for the past few weeks, out of both Virginia Beach and Beaverton....Size was there but not the normal #'s...
