We fished out of Linwood on Saturday. What a beautiful day to fish! Morning bite was slooowww. Ended up with two eyes in the evening. One 7lbs, one 4lbs. Lost a real nice fish, set the hook and broke the line.....obviously I was a little too anxious after fishing for several hours without a bump. All action came right at dark. Caught two and lost one within 15 minutes! Fish came on 1/3oz glow cleo, 3/8oz glow chartreuse lead head, and lost one on 3/8oz glow white lead head.
Lots of fishermen out there. Shanties as far as you could see.
Decided to sleep in on Sunday after seeing the weather forecast.
I'm hoping to try it again later in the week.

Kletus,

How deep of water were you fishing? We fished out of Erickson Friday and Saturday, only managed one in 21ft of water. I have been experiencing very limited success this year but have seen people fishing the same areas, do great. I have a question do you hit or bump bottom when jigging? I spoke w/ a couple locals and they insist this is a must or your just waisting your time. I'm starting to believe that, seeing I usually fish 6-8 inches off bottom. Any suggestions on technique would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,
We were fishing in 16 FOW.
As for technique, I always bump bottom with lead heads.
I raise the lead head up 3 inches to 1+ feet (I play with the distance a lot to see what the eyes are interested in)and then drop it back down until it hits the bottom.
With spoons, it varies. On saturday, I had the spoon set at about a foot off the bottom when the walleye hit it.
Hope this info helps.
Good Luck,
Krazy Kletus

We have been fishing all over the bay this winter. My last few trips have been off Ericson Road. What we have found is the fish are all over. I have a friend who was with us and moved all over saturday. He has an underwater camera. He saw fish all day out in the black hole. He first fished with us in the 7-9 FOW area.

We have been fishing that for a few days. The fish were in that depth for a while and they were thick. Limit catches were the norm. On Saturday they seemed to move back out once the word got out and the pressure got heavy.

You learn a lot by fishing in 7 FOW where you can watch everything that goes on. I found that most of my hits came when I dropped my bait on the bottom. They would pick it right up. I fished only the bottom six inches. You would be surprised how fish just come up and suck it in and you don't know you have a fish on. Quite exciting to watch schools of fish come in that are bigger then 12 pounds in some cases. We had one guy out there see over 100 fish in one morning. I think those fish have now moved up into the bay closer to the mouth.

I watch one fish come in and make a quick circle around my bait and stir the bottom up, looked like a tatic to confuse the bait. Then return in the cloud and suck up the bait.

What a blast it must of have been for the few who first found this school earlier in the week.

Kletus & Kingfisher 11,

Thanks for the info., I am thinking of heading out on Wednesday any suggestions for locations? It is a bit of a drive and as always, input is much appreciated.

Tim

2 of us started out 1 mile off Erikson and with no hits or fish in the hole we ventured over the crack, to 20 feet of water. promptly a 6 lber, followed by a 4 lber, and then my partner baged his wall fish at 29.5 inches and 11.5 lbs. Missed a few more as well. All fish came on a large chrome pimple with red tape and a minnow head.
Not banging bottom, just off, within 1 foot or less.

We caught fish on Saturday, too. We fished in 18 feet, about a mile past the crack. As soon as we setup I caught a 12 inch pike. That was weird. I ended up with 3 nice eyes and we took home seven all together. Alot of water on the ice at the crack when we came in.

A pike in 18 feet now if that isn't something and a 12 incher at that. lol I have never caught a pike in any water deeper than 8 - 10 ft. We have been doing well off Boutell Rd. in 15 ft just past the second crack south east of the e/w crack. In fact tonight I got 5 real nice walleye and one bonus 8# white fish. Now thats some nice eating. Later and good luck guys.
