Anyone see any of these available in the metro detroit area (I live near 26mile and van dyke and prefer something close by)? I may possibly replace my older MORA 8" hand auger with a LAZER hand auger. I am thinking maybe a 6" or even a 5". Has anyone tried to redrill a frozen up hole with these? According to their website it said it is easy to do with the Lazer series. Also with the smaller size, have you ever had a problem with a fish being too big to get out of your hole? I am trying to debate between 5" or 6". I usually catch pan fish but I also like to try for pike, walleye, and trout and want to make sure that most of the time I could get one of these larger fish through a hole.
Thanks,
John

John, I have a 5" and used it to re-drill some larger holes today. No problem at all.

John,
If you're targeting MAINLY panfish I'd go with the 5". It may not seem like it but I'm sure that you can get almost any panfish you catch through it. Also, I'm sure it's easier to drill a 5" than a 6".
I would also assume that the majority of holes you find out there are gonna be 6" or more. I would think that you shouldn't have a problem redrilling a 6" or more hole with a 5" lazer.

Hi jnpcook. I've owned a 6" Lazer now for a couple years and just this weekend opened up some old holes, no sweat to it. I like my 6" a bunch. Bought a sharpener for it too, made just for the correct angle on these babies, works sweet. A couple of strokes to each blade and she is good as new, goes threw the ice like butter. I am contemplating on picking up a 10" gas though, chasing 'eyes ya know, you gotta pop 'em out of there like a cork with the gaff even iff you're lucky !!! Hand drilling no problem till you hit 10" or so of ice and then it gets a bit tiring.

Hey, John: Gander Mt. over on the West side of the state yesterday still had some Lazer Augers. (Kazoo) ..... in fact they were on sale for around $49. Not sure what sizes they had left, OR if Gander Mt. on your side of the state could get them for you from over here or not, but it may be worth checking out if you don't find one on your side.

I saw them at the gander mountain near me for the same price. Only problem is that was before I decided I wanted one. Now they are sold out over there. Stupid me. I hadn't been out fishing in a while and forgot how hard my auger was to drill.

I have a 5" and an 8" lazer, Both cut equally as fast in all types of Ice. Also have a 8" Mora, no comparison to the Lazers.. The Lazers are Great Augers, just don't put too much downward pressure on them when cutting thick ice or they will bite too deep making it more difficult to turn, causing a rapid onset of "Auger Elbow". lol

OK, I finally located a LAZER auger after calling nearly every sporting goods store I could think of near me. Unfortunately it wasn't on sale but oh well, I was desperate after spending nearly a half hour drilling one hole with my 8" MORA last Friday. Blades were dull, I tried sharpening them with a honing stone and tried that this morning before I bought the LAZER. Auger just spun and wouldn't dig in.
I went with the 6" diameter. Man, can I say, what a difference. It is well worth the extra price. I drilled through 20-24" of ice today in probably 10-20 seconds with ease. I drilled maybe 10-20 holes today, moving around as I was having a hard time locating fish, and my arms are ok. A little tired but that is more from being tired from Fridays episode with the MORA. For me, I don't think I will ever need a power auger for the areas I fish after trying the LAZER. Well maybe when I get to be an old man I might need a power auger:)
Thanks for all the help,
John

JNP,
Glad to hear you found one nearby. I'm sure you will get many years of smooth cutting out of your new Lazer. How'd ya do fishing? Catch anything big enough that it was a challenge to get through the hole?

Caught a few small bluegills and a 14.5" largemouth bass. The bass was not a problem at all to get through the hole. I released all fish and they went down the hole just as easy as they came up.

Whale, you said you bought a sharpener for your Laser. What brand did you get and where did you get it?

Now I had heard that those blades don't really resharpen well at all. Is that not the case?

I haven't tried sharpening them myself. I drop mine off at a place near me (Hicks Tackle) and pick em back up a couple days later (that's why I have two sets of blades). When I get them back they are sharp as new. I do not know how many times this can be done, but I bet it's quite a few.
