A mousie and a spike are two different kind of grubs. I believe one is a bee larva. I am sure someone will know for sure.
How about Wigglers.
These are the nymph stage of the Hexagenia Limbata mayfly (fishfly on St. Clair).

Mousies look like sickly little mice in translucent coccoons. Nasty looking things.
Spikes are some kind of maggot and that's just about what they look like.
Wigglers, you may already know, are the nymph stage of hex.
Hope this helps!

Steve,
Spikes are regular maggots, they turn into those darker blue colored flies. ( I just had a batch, hatch in my bucket from about a month ago)
I have heard that waxworms were bee larvae also, but I had some of those hatch last year in my bucket and they definitely were NOT bee's. I looked through every book I had and could not find anything that looked like these things!
Maybe someone else could shed some light on the waxworms.
PS,, if you put those spikes in you're mouth to keep them warm or free up a hand,,,,,,,, they WILL "spike" ya.

spikes are also referred to as white larva is some places. they are the larvae of the blue bottle fly (Calliphora vicina) and are farm raised. waxworms are the larva of the bee moth (Galleria mellonella) and are also farm raised. Mousies are the larvae of the drone fly (Eristallis tenax) and from what i can tell are also farm raised. Wigglers are the larvae of the mayfly and in different parts of the country, they get different species of the larvae, often Hexagenia limbata. hope this helps ya out a little.

Mousies farm raised, I can confirm that. In the winter we'd take the bucket loader and push over a pile of pig excrement and get our bait.

oh, heres another couple, goldies are golden shiners, roseys are the rosey red minnows, blues are the larger blue minnows often just called shiners. borers are the corn borers, not many people use em, but they are dynamite, pretty darn expensive though. Gall grubs are the little grubs that make the galls in the goldenrods, you can harvest them yourself and are real good bait also.

waxworms when they hatch dont' turn into bees, but sometimes they really really look like em, had a batch once hatch in my tackle box in the basement when i was small and it freeked me out, couldn't believe they hatched in that little plastic container, lol.

i dont' mean to be a jerk, but i'm pretty sure that mousies aren't the larvae of the bot fly. Bot flies are pretty parasitic creatures and the larvae usually invade living tissues, organs, etc. there are many different species of bot fly and the infect many different animals, including humans. THe mousee, or rat-tailed maggot, from all reports i have heard are of the drone fly, here is a link http://www.alienexplorer.com/ecology/p39.html

those bot flies i didn't know about til today, man from everything i've read about em, they are disgusting.
ya got me on the goldenrod grub, didn't know what exactly they were.

I went fishing with my Dad this morning and I gently held a mousie by my mouth while I tied on a tear drop(We've all done this, right, makes em lively, warms em up!?!?!) He looked at me and said, "If your mother saw that, she would puke!"
After reading everyone's posts about mousies, I think I'm going to puke! LOL!:p

lol tangleknot, i wouldn't suggest that.... I didn't know about them liking the fecal-polluted water either. I've never put em in my mouth though... they never seemed as clean as the spikes, now i know why!

When I was a kid my dad always said you had to bite the tail off of the mousies cause the fish would grab the tail and pull the bait off. Still do it to this day, if you get a little juice on your lips just wipe it off with the back of your snotty gloves!:D :D :D

Do you catch mousies in a mousie trap? Do you find spikes in railroad ties? And how about waxies? Anything like pasties? I used to eat pasties now and again in the U.P. Strippers sometime wear them, too. Differnt kind of pastie though. No rutabega in the stripper kind - lots a meat though!

When I was young and didn't have money for bait we would keep our mousies from day to day. Dad always said to keep them in your inside shirt pocket to keep them warm. Sometimes I couldn't understand him because he also kept some in his lower lip. When we came home from fishing we would put the mousies on a shelf leading to the basement.Well being a kid, I would forget where yesterdays bait was, and away we would go leaving the bait on the shelf in the basement. Mom would find them a few months later, yelling at us, "Who the hell put these flys in this little box". Oh well.
Steve, if you want to find out what mousies are just leave em in a warm place like I used to do, and you'll find out. Have fun.
