Saginaw River 2-24-03

Fished it again tonight with my brother, Weezer and his buddy. Got there around 5 and missed two right off the get go and my brother missed one. Weezer got there around 5:30 and before he got his rods out bucket I hooked into a good fish. Got it up to the hole and weezer missed it with the gaff and he made another run, got tangled into my other line and was gone. This fish was a good 30" and 8-9lbs. After that about the same exact thing happened to weezer. Then I iced a 3-4lb fish. After that came weezers buddy losing 2 fish and landing a 15 1/4inch fish. Then came ricky pulling another 15 1/4 inch fish out. After that my brother lost another 8lb fish at the hole. Another guy by us iced a 6lb fish also. Not bad between 4 of us we ended up with 2-15inchers, and a 4lbers, and losing 3-8lb+fish at the hole.

Fished river in a.m. 0 for 0, drove to wickes fifteen guys no fish. Found a guy north of Z-bridge with 6# and 8#. Took his advice and fished from 3:00p.m. to 5:30 same place, two guys 20 bumps=1-3# 1-4# 1-9.12# 31 incher returned to hole. Pretty good evening, can't say where exactly but we were fishing a ledge outside channel 18' of water leading to a flat shallow area.
Firetiger rapala's and clown fireball jigs worked best-my friend said the fish came in a week before thaw. Tightlines to all.:)

Hey sounds like the fish are starting to come in and you guys did great. Still trying to hook up and met you guys but work and 1 1/2 drive is getting in my way. I hate fishing on the weekend.I have question. How big a hole do need to squeeze a 9lber through?

I fished north of the z-bridge sunday afternoon and caught a lot of little walleye and one about 5 lbs and another 16". I lost a one in the hole that was about 18" also. I will be fishing down there again saturday and maybe even friday. The fishing should only get better as the week goes now, I got word of some nice fish starting to move into the river mouth.

Rat City Hooker, Right now I double up my 8" holes. It makes it easier to gaff the fish. I should hopefully be getting my 10" auger back and I usually dont double those up.

Hey guy's, I've finally got a wrecking job at home but I get out at 5:30pm. I'm doing some demolition at malibou foundry and would like some info on where to go for a quick fish after work. I'll be out there friday afternoon as well, and everyday up until wed of next week. I'll be fishing with my boss on friday so please don't let me come near any safety meetings....LOL
Oh yeah, lots of foot traffic in that area.....Loose lips sink ships! Riverboy, I know that the turnaround hasn't produced this year, but I have a feeling they are there by now and I haven't seen anybody there for a week....That's where I'm going SAturday!! Wish I had a underwater camera to prove they are there.

Sorry I took so long to get back to ya, I was fishing in a spot where the guy has kept the same six holes open, all season, and I'd feel like a cad, saying where, because no one else has been fishing there, and the fishing is just getting good. I will say this, I was looking right at the bridge and everyone else seemed to prefer the other side of the river.
No sag, report today busted out of work early and fished selfridgeab and managed 16 nice perch, moving minnows or wigglers slow as possible top to bottom. Very fussy, gotta work on a spear for next season. Even considering a dip net like they use for suckers in the Rifle. ;)

You guys are right-- A LOT of people out there tonight!!! My brother-in-law did real well and ended up with his limit. I missed two fish and my dad lost a nice one at the hole. Did see a fair number of fish caught tonight. I may be searching for a new spot as well-I think the fish have moved into some of the usual spots in other parts of the river and I think now is the time to try them.

I should be there by 6:30 am as long as the bait shop opens at 6:00 am. I would think that the fish would bite thru out the day if keep moving around a lot. I usually fish for a couple hours and then just hole hop and usually have pertty good luck doing that.
I will have a otter II shanty set up and will probaly be fishing along the west break.

I come in on M-46 so I always just stop at Live Bait on the corner of Michigan and Gratiot. I think he opens at 6:00 am so it shouldn't be a problem. We can meet up then North of the Z-bridge.

Fellow sportsmen,

I am a new member from the Lake Saint Clair area. Am planning on trying for some walleyes on the Saginaw River (Z-bridge area) Friday afternoon.

Where do you guys who fish the river regularly get your walleye minnows? How early are they open? I know down here, we have some bait shops who we go to regularly because of good counts, prices, service, etc, and I just want to fit in.

Thanks for any help here, as I have never fish the Saginaw area before!

Dugfish, dont worry we will get into some fish. I drove down there about 4:30 to see how many people were down there and turned around and just started laughing. I might be down there all day friday now just to get a spot. I might be setting up all the shanties I got just to save us some room. Oh yeah dugfish, were there any a-- holes down there tonight??? Was there a guy down there in all orange that "knew" everything and wouldnt shut up?? Thanks. I think i am going to go out and buy a pair of boxing gloves for friday.:D .

Patchreoo, Oh yeah i am sure there are fish in there. Were we are fishing will stay good for the rest of the walleye run. All the people dpwn there dont help. I will have a buddy out tomorrow evening with a camera down there and I will post and let you know how the fishing goes and what we see.

Sorry for the late response, but I don't really know that guy in the orange, but I see him down on the river a lot. That was my brother-in-law in the all black the other night that hit all those fish. He had a career night indeed, he couldn't believe it himself. I fished N. of the Z this morning for an hour from 9-10 and lost a nice one at the hole just before 10. Not many fish caught this morning.

Fished N of the z Bridge Wed. & Thurs. Wed the bite was hard and furios from 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm. Thurs was non existant from 2:00pm till 7:30pm one bump...

maybe the fish have moved up?
