I was wondering if hiking shoes are enough for a backpacking trip to isle royale. If not, what type of boot should I be looking at. I can't spend more than $100.

Hiking shoes should work fine. Be sure to break them in. There's nothing worse then a blister to ruin a hiking trip. Be sure to bring moleskin just in case and as a prevenative measure. Have fun.

I'm not sure what the difference between hiking shoes and boots is.

I would go with boots. One of the discussions Jim and I had at the end of our week involved ankles. Each of us claimed to have turned each ankle a dozen times. Both of us felt that our boots kept us from twisting an ankle and ruining the trip.

The boots I prefer are full leather that come up above the ankle. The important part to me is "up above the ankle".

If you watch the sales and hit the stores often, a good pair of boots can be had for $100.

Look at REI or EMS.

What lakes did you fish?

mostly fished the big lake. trolling with rapalas or crankbaits 5to10 inches long. you can rent a motorboat or canoe. one lake thats good for pike is lake richie or brady cove. all the lakes are good for pike though. if you troll about 100 to 200 yards behind a canoe you should pick up some lakers a little ways off the island. out to 150 yards out. just where its deep. its a blast. hope you have a great time. are you flying out?

We will be hiking across the the Greenstone trail. Hopefully we can fish a couple of lakes on the way but we will not be carrying a canoe. We are driving from detroit to copper harbor.
