I use a winchester mod 70 in 223 light barrel
I use it for any thing from crows to coyotes.
Use should look for somthing with a dull finish and depending on if you'll do a lot of walking with it something light. My buddy has a remington mod 7 in 223 its a great gun for the type of hunting were doing.I've shot woodchucks with my 223 out to 400 yrds.I reload my own ammo but if you had to buy it you can get it pretty cheap.

Hunter4life,
You will find information on these cartridges under the "reloading" forum. Both of these cartridges have been featured recently as "cartridge of the week". Even if you don't reload, you might find some information that might help you in your decision. Good Luck!

One one nice thing about 223 is if you don't reload shells are cheap and can be bought at gun shows in quanity. I have a minni 14 I use for song dogs run with hounds a running yoe you need quick second shot.

hey guys thanks for quick response, i plan on hunting coyotes mostly and of course the fox to . i probably plan on reloading later down the road but notime soon due to the cost of getting started. is there a big recoil difference between the 223 and 22-250, and also how about the report of the gun , hunting down here in southern michigan were houses are rather close, i do love the thought of haveing the benifit of the 22-250 range over the 223 if i do need it , it is there
hunter4life: This is one of my favorite guns the Remington Model 700 . You might want to consider getting it in the adl and if your not reloading by all means get the 223 and shells are much cheaper. Be sure to get it in the regular barrel not the bull barrel, as they are SO HEAVY to carry. All my varmint rifles are camouflaged. The glare when coyote hunting can really hurt you some times. There is really not that much difference in the 22-250 vs 223 for range in my own opinion. I guess if you were only going to get one gun I would recommend the 223. Hope this helps. If for some reason you want a 22-250 in the Varmint special Let me know I have one here that just sets in the safe waiting for someone to shoot it.

HUNT4LIFE;
I too am considering a .22 caliber centerfire. Before you buy a Remingto make sure tot ake alook at the Ruger #1 Varminter. By all means buy what you want, just take a look you may be pleasantly supprised. I'm actually doing quite well with a .17 REM.

I use a H&R .223 single shot. Man is that gun a lot of fun to shoot. Most of the guys I coyote hunt with prefer to use either a .25-06 or .243. The main reason for those choices is that they can easily load them up for deer. I would feel a little on edge using a .223 for deer. There is one guy using a .17 Rem. That is another gun that is fun to use. If varmiting is what you are after, and you are choosing between the .223 and the .25-250, I would reccomend the .223. Bullet cost is a big plus also.

ULTRAMAG- How is that HR single on accuracy? That sounds like a reasonable little gun, Ill bet she's easy on the pocket book too. I'm leaning real heavy towards the Ruger#1 but @$500.00 it needs to be spot on accurate. IF THe HR comes close for 1/2 the price she may be a realistic possibility.

Hunter4Life, in my opinion, it depends on how much you will be shooting the gun in a years period to even consider the aspect of the cost of shells. If you hunt a few times a year with it , by all means, get the
22-250!! It IS far superior to the .223! I'm sure you have checked out the ballistics and they speak for themselves; and the rounds are easy to find at any sports store.
If I'm not mistaken, the .22-250 round is the casing of a .308 necked down; so of course the report and kick will be slightly elevated. But whichever round you shoot, any of your neighbors are going to hear them both anyways! So I say go with the 22-250.
Have fun.

I always thought that was a 250 Savage necked to .22. Any thoughts MR.16?
a 308 necked down to a 22 is called a cheetah

I'd like to hear more about that H&R single shot as well. I assume you have a scope on that little wonder. What does that thing wiegh in at?
I have seen the 12 & 20 gauge modles set up with scopes, they make ideal first guns for a youngster.
I bet the .223 model would be fun to shoot on the range as well as hunt with. ;)

Song-Dog, I own a Ruger No. 1B, 270 cal. It is a great gun, I like it more every time I shoot it. Resting it on a milk crate I had no problems shooting 1" or less groups at 100 yards. That was with factory Winchester ammo.

FYI .22-250 is a .250/3000 Savage necked down to .223
My target rifle is a rem 700 Synthetic Stock, Fluted barrell, Harris Swivel Bipod, 6-24X scope in .223.ALL MATTE BLACK. No perceived "kick" at about 11lbs. Have shot a Ruger #1 in .22-250 years ago. No real felt recoil. I did carry an M16 E-1 (.556mm = .223 REM) for a while in the 60's. Didn't really "kick" for a 6lb weapon. Barrell tended to rise up real fast on full auto thru 18 rounds. Hard to keep an Infantryman firing on semi-auto when just a flick of the thumb puts her on "ROCK-N-ROLL" [Squad leader(SGT.),Second Squad, 3rd. Platoon. Delta Company, 1st. Brigade, 7th Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division RSVN.] Any ?'s.

I read an aticle not to long ago ,I think it was in petersons hunting or NRA american hunter. It compared quite a few single shot in .223 and .22-50. what was intesting was they said that the H&R shot just as good as the others. I own a couple and can vouch for that. I wouldnt hesitate to buy one. I would go with the .223 unless I were going to reload. If I were planning on reloadin I would also consider the .243 and .25-06 just because I coul load up for deer.
