I'm late with this report because I just returned from out of town.
Thanks to a couple of hints from Northern Outdoorsman my outing last weekend was a success! (THANKS N.O.!!!) We came home with a dozen jumbos and caught about 20 smaller ones. The action was fast when the schools would come in and we seemed to get at least one or two from each school.
The bites were light and you had to wait, wait, wait and wait some more to get them to suck the whole bait in. Minnows worked best and it seemed the smaller the better. Jigging a large Walleye minnow seemed to bring them in and the small teardrop with a wiggler or minnow seemed to be the breakfast of choice for the yellow bellies. We had a few small schools (4-6 fish) of big perch 12"-14" come in but they would only nip at the bait and take off. We did get a few of these big dogs but many swam away.
All in all it was a blast! Every 5 to 10 minutes we were watching a new school come in and mess with our baits. We did have one mudpuppy on and returned him to the water.
The wind was a battle and we had a white fishing bucket blow away. Anyone catch a bucket flying by at Cotton road last Saturday? It would be nice to get it back.
Were going back out this weekend and I'll post a report on our success.
Good luck all! :D
