I,m looking to replace my gps and I,m not sure what to get. I have an old impulse loran 2830.I use it for salmon fishing in the great lakes.I've been leaning towards garmen but open to suggestions. Also considered handheld so I can use it for trips and hunting. Any one with any info that works for them would be appreciated.

I have a Garmin GPS330M, it's a handheld, so the screen is a little on the small side. But it comes with Mapping software preloaded with marine info, buoys, lights, markers and ports of refuge. It has WAAS capabilities, and is pretty accurate. Plenty of memory for waypoints and loading detailed street maps (software is included).
It was about $189 from Cabelas, I've been pretty happy with it.

Look down the board menu a little further and you'll see a whole section on GPS, geo-caching and loads of other stuff GPS related.

Bluedevil,
I used to have an Impulse 2830 too!
Then I got a new boat and decided to upgrade from Loran to GPS, but I also wanted the fishfinder in the same unit like the 2830.
I chose Garmin 238. Mainly because I wanted the bluechart capability.
I was kind of worried about the fishfinding side of the unit, because garmin had new to this industry. But after using it for one year, it performed great.
I liked the unit so much, I just bought a Garmin GPSmap 76s handheld. Now I can bluechart while icefishing :).

I have used the Garmin 162 on my charter boat for the past three seasons. Loaded in the Blue Chart for Lake Michigan. Next to the compass, it is my most trusted item on the boat. I store hot spots and use it to navigate too and form the lake. If you are serious about your fishing and depend on knowing where you are at all time (even in thick fog), a good GPS is a must. Captdenny is right, buy the best you can afford. Handhelds will do the job, but will be happier if you buy a good one now, you probably will later anyway!
