my cousin told me they got checked by the DNR last sunday.
the officer told them that there is legislation on the books
in lansing to outlaw hunting coyote with dogs.
anybody heard anything on it? and if there is who do you call to voice your opinion on the matter? any help would be great.
thank you.
Here's a answer to this.. should put your minds at ease
I review the trapper forum frequently and resently found the following post,
"hunting coyotes with dogs outlawed". I am the furbearer research biologist
for the MDNR and I have no knowledge of any such proposed legislation.
Furthermore, I checked with Dennis Knapp, Legislative Liason for the IDNR and
he is also unaware of any action to outlaw coyote hunting with dogs. Could
you please post a reply to this effect?

This is off the subject but.
I noticed you said you are a biologist for the MDNR.
I was wondering if you could give me any tip's about where the Snowshoe population is high??
I have heard reports from buddies that have gone to the UP and have not had luck around cederville.??
Thanks fo any help you can provide...

Rob,
Don't know about how hare are doing in Cedarville area, but there are still lots on Drummond. The problem is getting at them with 20" of snow. We ran lots last weekend, but tough going on the dogs.

Rob,
Yeah, 20" of fluff. Snowshoes were a must, but we were guiding some greenhorns that just dogged it without them. We stuck to the cedars where the snow was less than 12" and the dogs were able to go some. My 8 mo. old pup never wore out and lead most chases. It seemed like the hares stayed tighter too. Only 1 typical chase out of earshot. Those guys killed 4, but serious hare hunters would have gotten 8-10 in a 1 1/2 days of huntin.

What is the breading of your pup.
Thats pretty good for a eight month old pup to run in that stuff.
Do you go up there alot?
I gotta get up there.
I'd like to wate untill a good melt though.
But by then then buck rabbit's will be taking the dog's outta the country.

A bill recently introduced in the California legislature would bring an end to the tradition of hunting with dogs.

Rob,
I have a Patch beagle. Got otta hound hunting rabbits when I moved from PA to IL 12 years ago. Moved to MI last spring and just got lucky finding a pup. She ran (pounded a rabbit for 2 loops around a bean field) her first rabbit at 11 weeks and hasn't stopped since. However, her brother didn't show any interest until he was 4 months. He's doing good now though. She's had 40+ rabbit/hare shot off her since Oct and I put my gun away several weeks ago. I keep being told how special she is, but like I said I've been outa the business for a while. I'd like to field trial her some this spring to see how she stacks up against other dogs, but I'm afraid she pushes too hard. She loves the hares cause she can run them wide open. But on the cottontails, she overruns if she gets excited. I watched her gear it down real well last night and hold tight to a bunny that zig zagged for about 20 yards. Once she learns how to do that consistently I think she'll really be special.

Did you get her here in mich?
Yeah I would wait to field trial her for a while esp. if your thinking large pack..
It's fun whatching them learn to gear down..
I run flat out runners to but I don't run them on anything but a cotton tail untill they gear down easily.
Most of mine have learned to walk this winter with all the bad weather we have had.
You said you have been out of it for a while huh?
Have you heard of the ARHA field trials??

Rob,
Got her from a guy named Todd Olsen in Westfalia. He has a good pack that I get to run with often. Is that the field trialing for $$$? When I say I've been outa the business, I mean the hound business. I never field trialed dogs I had in PA, they were strickly for hunting. I sure wish I had one now to breed to this pup down the line. They weren't registered, but could run rabbits to beat it. My cousin let the bloodline die out when my grandfather passed. Too bad.

No it's not for money but it is for points towards a championship.
You should come if it's not that far from you.
It's always a good time..
Maybe we could go hunting sometime.
yeah it's always hard if you don't keep the blood going your self
