I'll be at Houghton Lake saturday and sunday, staying at the Best Western on the south shore. Is there any good places to fish in that area that isn't too far as I'll be on foot on the ice. Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

The whole south shore provides decent fishing. Straight out a couple hundred yards from "Lyman's" bait shop is good. just go out until you find the line of shanties and plop down. Last time I was there a couple weeks ago, pike action was hot on tip-ups with golden shiners and perch were hitting wax worms and small minnows, some size to them here and there. Also, straight out from the DNR public access again until you find others fishing. Lyman's staff is very knowledgeable and helpful as to where the fish are hitting. If you choose to fish out from their shop it is likely they will allow you to park there. Happy Fishing!!

Try to get out a day break. I got some nice gills just out and a little to the right of west dnr ramp 4 weeks ago. Good luck.

Uncle Al;
Head west from the Best Wester about a mile or two on M-55 (HL Drive) to "Lyman's on the Lake". It a bait & tackle shop right on the lake. He rents shantys but you can walk right out from there to where the fishin is from there! Also another spot is back towards the Best Western across from the high school, a lot of guys fishing there not to far out. Those two spots are good "gill" spots, and a few pike. Earlier the better. Out a little further to the left (west) from there is a good crappie/walleye spot that starts up just about dark to an hour or two past. To get to the best walleye/perch fishing you have to get out farther and more to the northeast side of the lake. (several miles!)
Anyhow, go to Lyman's for your bait and ask him whats going on. Whats great is he and his guys in there are a friendly bunch and will always share what they know, even if its bad! :eek:
