My brother in law and I are going up north this weekend to visit family and are planning on fishing Elk lake. We heard that there is good lake trout and whitefish fishing. Anyone ever fish there, and have any tips? I'll post a report when I get back. Thanks

It's been S-L-O-W lately, it usually is in Feb. Ice is about 4-6" and nice and hard. For whitefish try teardrops with wigglers. Kewadin bay is a good spot, look for the shanty town, you can't miss it. For lakers use tip up's with shiners near the drop off anywhere on the lake. Good luck, be sure and post a report.

Fished elk lake Saturday from 7am to 7pm. What a slow day! right off the bat I hooked into a BIG whitefish using a minnow on the bottom. Got it to about a foot under the ice and it dove down to the bottom, (40 ft). Along the way, I must have gave it some slack, cause he got off:( . My brother in law hooked into a laker on a rapala and lost it at the hole. No other bites for the rest of the day. Lots of snow and great scenery, was great to get away from SE michigan for the weekend:D

Thanks for the report, under the circumstances I'd say you guys did pretty good! What size/color Rapala was your partner using? I like to jig Rapalas too and I'm always interested in whats working.

He was using a firetiger #3 jigging rapala, with a red anise egg on the treble. It really works for the perch around LSC.
We may make it back up there later on this season. thanks for the info..

Thank you! With the solid cold weather we've been having we should have ice well into March.

I grew up in Antrim county and my dad and I fished Elk quite a bit. I found the best fishing was off Angel road (West Shore). We went out to the drop off, I think it was around 100 FOW. I always try to fish around 100 FOW for lakers, even on Torch.

We would each set one tip up and jig with pearl colored swedish pimples. They both worked well for us. That was some years ago. I bet it would still work in that area.

We always used greys also.
