Where are you guys getting your Nils from?
I used to find them once in a while over the counter, but I haven't seen any at a retailer in a while.
Thanks

Sorry....
Nils Master. Mooskie baits. I think they are made in Norway or Sweden,They are wide wooden baits, available up to something like 9". they are used in saltwater a lot. I just like to see colors in person before I buy them.

Are you talking Mooskie size?

Lakeside carries them as well as Jones ripoff emporium

ESOX,

Just curious here, but do you do more casting, or more trolling? Im very interested in using more minnowbait type lures, as they seem to work for lots of people, but I just didnt have much success with them last year, unless we were trolling. Casting, a bucktail never did me wrong. I never so much as had a follow casting minnowbaits though. For the most part I was tossing a depthraider at weed edges and weed pockets, and trying to work down weedlines. I got one 39" on a depthraider while trolling 25' off a weedline at night. I also tried casting a large jointed-rapala in and along the weeds (this bait actually produced a small pike). And I had an equal lack of success with a swim whizz (not really a minnow bait, but similar technique I would think). I am picking up a few more minnow baits this year to give them a second chance of sorts. Do most minnowbaits produce better when trolled? Any tips for casting with them in general? The lakes I fish dont have a lot of rock, so I mostly target weed lines, dropoffs, underwater channels, and points.

I cast at least 90% of the time. I know people have a lot of luck working minnow baits slowly, but I tend to work them fairly quickly. generally I'll fish them with hard pulls, followed by slack line. I use a solid leader when doing this. Almost like fishing a glider. Think about how fast you have to fish Bucktails to keep them over the weedtops. Slow has it's times (cold water and post cold front). But I really dont think you can fish a bait too fast casting.

Good to hear you are a caster, that gives me a bit more confidence knowing that it works for someone at least!

Im going to try to catch more fish on plastics (reapers, dawgs, etc) and minnowbaits this year. I dont feel very versatile only having confidence in my bucktails.

Thanks for the tips!

If you really want to have fun, pick up a Magic Maker. Things are very versatile, and get a lot of hits. I just need to increase my hookup ratio on them. I got a Clown one last year thet already looks like an old vetran. (fish on a solid titanium leader). You can make them swing as much as 4' side to side. What self respecting Muskie could ignore that??:D

Cool, ill pick one of those up. Im also going to pick up a doc or jackpot, as those look like tons of fun to fish with also!

Im probably going to be using that Abu UC for tossing these baits, and I had been planning on going with a fairly cheap rod. Would an ugly stick or the likes be acceptable for working the cranks, gliders, big top waters? Or should I just bite another bullet and pick up another st croix?

Magic Makers weigh 4 oz. I think they work best on a rod with a fairly stiff tip, and with a braided line. Kind of hard to get any glider to work well with a soft tip or stretchy line.

I use braid exclusively for the muskies. On that rig for the 'big' baits, ill probably go with 65lb or 80lb power pro. My bucktail rig I go with 50lb power pro. And the plastics rig I may go with either 30lb or 50lb (daiwa 253la for tossing big tubes, reapers, etc).

I dont see any st croix premier musky rods with anything other than 'fast' tips. Would they be suitable in your opinion for such use? Any suggestions would be great.

Pretty soon you are going to have to start charging me for the wealth of knowledge you provide! Once I get the hang of tying bucktails, ill get a few color choices from ya and send a few your way. Thanks ESOX! :)

Any Premier rated for that weight rating will do the job. Also take a look at the Loomis MUR786C-JB it's only a couple bucks more than the premiere, and a lot lighter. Thats the shortest rod I carry, at 6'6". You will find that jerks and gliders are a lot easier to work with the rod tip down, so you don't want to go too long. Besides, with 4oz lures, casting distance is hardly an issue.

Remember, for the plastics and crankbaits use a stranded leader, for jerks and gliders use a solid. which means if you are cranking a Jake, put a stranded leader on it, jerking it use solid...

I guess its not too bad as long as they last, and last, and last, and last....

Just was a bit of a shocker after putting 20 other baits in the cart at $7-12 each.

The super top raiders are right up there too.

I think I need a better job :)
