has anyone seen these hand held depth finders? they are suppose to give you water depths right through the ice? how accurate can they be? they also claim to be a fish finder as well. wonder how much they cost. would be nice and compact though. what do you think? small as a flashlight and run on two 9v batteries. sounds almost too good to be true.

They work great. Accurate as any other depth finder (graph/flasher) I've seen around. Any object passes between bottom and unit and the unit will beep, flash the depth of the object. Polar Vision / Lazer Vision - same unit, different color case, red for warm water, blue case for the "winter model". Cost is about $20.00 more for the "winter model", gets you nothing different. Carry a small bottle of salt water and apply a small amount of it to the ice when shooting through it, makes for a much more accurate reading.

does it have to be salt water or is that just so the water doesn't freeze? duh i think i just answered my own question! thanks for the input. they just looked like a flashlight. but glad to hear they work out good.

Put some RV antifreeze in a squirt type bottle (it enviro friendly). I have the polar vision works fine, vexilar also makes one. They eat up the batteries if you use them constantly. one full day (10hrs) and its time for new 9volts. Thats why I use rechargeable 9v. batt.

Another vote for the Polar Vision here!!! I use mine to find depth and structure (they're dynamite when used with a lake map); when I find what I'm looking for, the handheld goes in the bucket and the FL-8 goes to work. A pair of nine volt batteries will last me most, if not all, of the season. Don't know how I ever got by without it.

couple of questions.
I would like one to save time finding the drop offs,
If theres hard snow and rough ice, can you wipe off the snow, spray the liquid and get an accurate reading?

can you pick up weed edges?
thanks
