How do you guys with Vexilar FL-18's set the gain to see your bait in split screen zoom? Do you set it so there is only a narrow green line on the zoom portion or something different?

Yes, set it to show your lure is a single green line or just slighty more if it tends to come and go.

Assuming you are talking about depths over 5ft and using AutoZoom (split screen), set it to Normal Auto Zoom then set adjust your gain until the lure is green to flashes of yellow.
For depths of 5ft or less use LP Auto Zoom. It makes a huge difference in LP (low power) so you have to play around with the gain again.

I'm not sure if it is the same for both the 8 and the 18 but I did read on a tech page that a rule of thumb is about 1 setting on your dial for every 10 feet....so 20 feet of water would be around 2 ideally, 30, 3, etc.

I usually don't go to normal mode until the depth gets to 12 ft or so, low power till then.

I was refering to water deeper than 10'. I use normal mode after that. Thanks for the info everyone. I wanted to make sure I wasn't setting it too high. I watched several fish come over and look at my minnow tonight but they wouldn't take it! GRRRR....seems to be a lot of that going around.;)

Fishing for what? Perch? When you see fish coming in but not taking the minnow try switching baits to a Ken spoon and jig it then stop.
That is where the Vex really shines. You can see fish checking out your bait but not hitting. Try switching to something different to coax a hit. Once you find out what they will hit then you are there.

I'm not really sure what they were. I was fishing in a 20' hole in a local lake in the lapeer area. I tried all sorts of different colors, shapes, and styles but no luck. Didn't have any wax worms though, just minnows.

Wer'e they on the bottom or suspended? Sounds like gills if they were suspended.

These guys were right on the bottom. I'm thinking they might have been perch. I saw a couple schools of suspended fish come through but they weren't interested in what I had to offer either. I never would have seen those fish without the split screen. Pretty cool when that feature works out.
