I tried Kent Lake back when we had our very first safe ice in late Dec.I don't know the lake and moved my set up(2 tip-ups/sucker minnows)3 different times before I finally found some decent weed beds.Stayed there for a couple of hours (AM-Noon)and never got a flag.
I may try Whitmore Lk. Sun. morning for pike.(don't know where to go but I might go take a look)

Mule Skinner,

Thanks for the info - I get days off during the week and only one weekend a month, so I'll take my five year old and wife with me to Kent on Tuesday or Thursday (depends on weather - we don't have a shanty). When I was hunting last fall around Kent, found a couple of potholes near the paved road in the park that were just teaming with gills - looked like some nice size ones, too. May try those. Where did you get your bait? I'm coming from downriver and I'd rather not drive south of here to Lake Erie just to get bait. Thanks again

As a fellow Civil Servent,I can relate I have the same type of schedule. The bait issue is a good question?Milford is near Kent Lk. I'm not sure if they have a bait & tackle shop or not?
For me comming from Ypsi,I had to go clear to Belleville then back which was way out of my way.
The area is new to me as far as fishing goes.I wish I knew of something closer.I do most of my fishing in the Waterloo Rec. Area

Statebull,

There's a party store/bait shop on Milford rd. Take the Milford road exit off 96 and go north a couple miles. The north entrance to the park is right there just past the Dairy Queen.

Lots of small perch with a few keepers off the east boat ramp in 9' of water. Should keep the kids busy. The west ramp has almost 40' water in places, again alot of small perch and a few crappies.
