checked for one at cabelas the other day and they wanted $50 for a solid steel (but still to light) spear, i hear bottom line has some for around $30. Ive checked out a few and would really like to find an old forged one. The ones i've seen lately have the barbs made with a hacksaw cut. we used to puddle welding rod and grind it down for a harder point and barb, also have seen people oil quench cold roll to case harden the point. Most of the spears ive looked at are dull. Let me know if you find a good one as I'm still looking also.

I am thinking hard about making and selling some .,,But it is a litle late in the game for that!
allthough they can't seem to keep them on the shelf in the bait shops.
the one I like the best is made out of 1" round stock and drilled and taped for 1/4-20's I used grade eight 10" 1/4-20's on 1 1/2" centers (sharpend of course, very hard, they stay sharp)
Also if you break one you just screw in a new one!
This works very well but I don't know how cheep I could sell them!!
Anyway I am kicking around a few other idea's I let you know if I make a bunch up!!

A good pike/muskie spear can be had for the $50 range.

But a good whitefish/herring spear, with poured lead, sharp tines, and balanced.... will set you back about $100.

There is a fellow in Barbeau that makes absolutely beautiful whitefish spears. Kind of a stiff initial price to pay, but worth the investment as its the kind of spear you can pass on to your grandchildren someday.

Contact Rob Sibbald at: (906) 635-2996.

He owns a machine/welding shop and does a few of these spears on the side. Tell him I (Chuck Picotte) referred you to him.
