Step right up laaaadies & gentlemen!!!!!
Place your vote for the best (brand) power auger on the planet !!!
Even though there are several styles , and a few different manufacturers --
The top two , that come to mind are :
Strikemaster (Mora) Ice Drills

can't beat a strikemaster lazer hand auger if you don't have the change to get a gas one.... plus they have a good sharpening system for it also.....
another thing i just read is that one of the eskimo lines uses the SAME blades as th lazer hand auger, so that may be a good deal for a cheaper price, although i got mine for a steal.

I also have a Jiffy 30 (3hp) with a 10" auger. Its a little heavy but it does the trick ecspecially when you have a a foot of ice or better. I use it for walleye and pike fishing.

I like my Earthquake 2 hp.
Light and plenty of power for an 8" hole.

You said it DD!! Grew up using an old ax head welded to 1 1/2 steel pipe. The ol' man said he didn't need to spend any money on a fancy auger ( this was before gas one's) When he had three strappin boys to make holes for him. Damn thing worked great too, as long as the blade was razor sharp.
I have an Earthquake too. They are really Jiffys with a post hole bit on them. I like a tool that does double duty. One powerhead, two uses.

The Lazer hand auger is the best, especially hooked to my 24 volt bosch drill. But my 3hp Jiffy 10 ' is good still.

LMAO!!
Earlier this season,we had an old-timer come out on the ice, carrying a bucket and somethin' else I couldn't quite make out until he got close enough to us,,,,,
IT WAS AN AXE,,, and before we could say anything , he says,
"now before you guys start laughin at me, this is how we used to have to do it " and he proceeded to WHACK out some holes with that axe.
I offered to slice him up some "swiss cheese" with my "JIFFY"
but he thoughtfully declined, he proclaimed this is how I've always done it !

PS: I also saw 2 guys SPUD through 14 inches of ice at "Selffish" today.
Got a chance to use my new Strikemaster Lazer Mag Express yesterday. It rocks! No more of that hand drilling/spud crap for me.:)
Mike
Picked up an Eskimo Mako last year at the end of the season. Was on clearance 40% off, $160 after the markdown. It's been a great auger so far, made by Ardisam, which makes some quality earth augers. Model 30's are great, but they have some weight.

Yo MSUICEMAN,
What sharpening system are you talking about for the Lazer? I'd be very interested in that as I go through a few sets of blades a year!

We've only ever carried Jiffys. They seem to hold up better than the other brands. Just picked up a 2hp 9 inch Jiffy with the new Stealth bit, boy does that sucker cut!

heres a link:
http://www.strikemaster.com/store2002/blades.html
there is a sharpener to the lower right, my friend swears by it and it seems to work well.
Ungodly simple to use....
The gatco sharpener would prolly do a really good job also, and has more uses for sharpening knives, etc.
just my 2 cents though,

Steve,
I've got the Gatco system, but, have been worried about using it because of everything you hear about possibly changing the angle on the blade. I guess you never know till you try though!

Although I rely on the old manual, I would say Strikemaster. :)
