Hello All,
I was reading in a Tom Huggler book about the giant ciscoes in Orchard Lake and the good population of them in Maceday/Lotus. What's a ciscoe? What do they look like? Is it worth fishing for them, and how would you do that?
Thanks in advance
Ray

Cisco is another name for Lake Herring. When they are spawning on reefs (Fall) they concentrate the predators like you wouldn't believe.
Ciscoes in Orchard Lake? Time to plant some Muskie in there!

When I went to Algonquin Provincial park. I caught tons of these on the fly rod. They are nice sized and fun to catch. We were starved so we kept a couple to eat. They tasted o.k. too. But I wonder? Dirty sock probably would have tasted good at that point. Has anyone else eaten these? How was it?

I went into the grocery store this morning and they were selling smoked ciscoes. Didn't look close enough at the price to see how good they taste ;)

ciscoes taste pretty good, kind of oily.... my family pickles them and i love em.... well used to pickle them as my grand dad is the one that went to the UP for em every year and he is no longer with us. Pickled herring is wonderful! they are oily which makes them a very good candidate to be smoked too, which i bet they are delectable.
