I'm dozing off in the easy chair with a magazine at about 7pm,and the wife lets our two, four footed hooligans out for a bathroom break. All of a sudden my Golden Hank starts in with the "Come here and kill it"Bark he uses when there's a skunk, possum,or 'coon afoot on the premesis.I put on the slippers, grab the shotgun and flashlight and head outside,There under my window is an adult Redtail Hawk in full defensive posture with hank and Daisy tag teaming the poor thing.I zapped daisy as she wont listen well to the off command, and convinced Hank it was OK and went inside.
I then called several #'s trying to get ahold of the DNR.No dice.I then remembered that Zack Doss one of the local C.O's is a local boy and got his number from the Sherrifs dept. non emergency line.
I have had a Redtail nesting in the back of my place for about 4 years now,and have shared a hunt with her several times from the same tree.I have watched her young grow up with the bino's,and then watched them hunting in my back field several times.I found all of a sudden I had an odd attachment to the bird.I got ahold of Zacks wife who was in the process of fixing Zacks dinner, and she took my name and number, after I apologized profusely for pestering her.I felt a bit like a heel.
Soon the phone rang and it was Zack just sitting down to dinner and he told me that he would be out in about 20 min. as he planned on skipping dessert anyway.Again I apologized as I hate it when I get interrupted at the dinner table.
Sure enough 20 Min.Later the Green dodge came up the drive, and Zack tossed a towel on the stricken bird and put her in the critter cage.He explained that they do this often and just knock themselves dingy doing so,but the bird would be transferred to a rehab clinic In Indianna, and then released if possible after recovery.
I appreciate his time, and wonderful manners, and the demeanor in which he dealt with my irrational concern for the bird.
We need a couple hundred more like Zack out there,so they wont have to give up dessert for nut cases, and their wives wont have to take dictation while doing the domestics.
A big thanks from me to the Doss family!
