There must be some traditional hunter that has taken a deer, or taken a shot at least. How about sharing your stories? <----<<<

First, I need the opportunity for a shot. The next two weeks will be grand.
I'm teaching myself to shoot a recurve and have shot a target lots! Even got the yellow a few times, but then again my garage is yellow.....

Ok Joe you want to know about misses. I took out the recurve on my Shiawassee Federal doe only hunt. The first day I saw over fifty deer. That morning I had a doe come in about twenty yards, a clean miss. Had bucks and small does come in about ten yards away. Then another doe came in about ten yards away by a deadfall. All that was showing was a low lung or a heart shot. You guessed a miss right underneath of her. At the shot a buck and the two does ran right to my buddy that was sitting about fifty yards away. He spined her with his compound. Well that is it for the first day. If you want to know if I connected on the other days with the compound, you will have to go to the main forum. BAYDOG

Baydog, I hear ya. I was pretty relieved that I didnt get a shot last week with my recurve. When I shot at objetcs around my tree after the first morning hunt, I couldnt hit the broadside of birch tree! I went back to camp, practiced, and got back to normal, but never really did regain my confidence. <----<<<

My opportunity came Friday afternoon on a mutated 4 pointer at 13 yards with my Bear Kodiak. He is number five with this bow.
Check out the story in General Hunting (Stick with 'em!).

I grunted in an 18 inch wide 8 point. He was broadside at 4 or 5 yards. I am hunting about 17 feet up the tree. The arrow hit a rib perfect and the arrow glanced off and fell to the ground!
I could not believe it! The deer trotted unharmed out into a clearing. I could see were I grazed him through my binoculars. I never got any penetration. I hit were I was aiming, just hit a rib, and it is was a pretty steep angle. I have made shots like this before, just never figured that would happen.
I am shooting a 65 lbs widow, with 660 grain arrows, but the angle was too great, and it deflected. I am shooting 3 blade snuffers, and I believe 2 blades slid down both sides of the rib.
I think I would of had a better ending if I had been shooting a single blade magnus or zwickee.
One lucky deer!!

Bishs, how long did the deer stay in view? Are you absolutely sure that you did not cut a hole between the ribs with your broadhead. You may want to follow-up on that animal. If by chance you put a nice slit between the ribs, he will not be able to draw air into his lungs through the trachea. He will suffocate. <----<<<
Hi guys! I have had a great season so far, but no hangin' deer yet. I've seen some nice bucks, and some does too. I am glad to hear that most of ya'll are having a good season. Good luck out there- sorry bishs about the shot. Good luck!!!

This deer was in my view for nearly 1/2 hour. He stood and looked back at me for a while, and at one point even stepped toward me, still curious of the grunting. He wagged his tail and began crossing 1/4 mile of harvested soybeans. I was able to observe him in the binoculars. He walked along a 40 acre cornfield and did not enter. He would walk then stop look around then wag his tail.
He was really unsure what had happened. I made absolutely sure that he was not mortally hit. I know it seems hard to believe, it is for me too! I am having a good season I have seen 11 bucks so far.

Yep, sounds like he just got a good shave then. If ya ever need a hunting bud, or experienced tracker....Eleven bucks! Heck of year no matter what happens :) Hope you get the one you want. <----<<<
I have managed to miss a rather large doe and an 8 point buck in southern Michigan. Both under 10 yards with a new recurve I had built!! However, after these embarrassing incidents, I took the little recurve to southern Indiana, where I hunt my property and lots of ground I roamed as a youngster. Saturday afternoon was spent looking at a farm that is now for sale--again one I loved as a youth. After bumping deer all over the place, my brother and I decided to change into our hunting clothes, take our climbers, and hunt for the remainder of the day. I chose a tree back from a field corner along an old logging road and went up about 20 feet. About 6:15pm, I had two bucks come out into the field about 80 yards from me, so I grunted and stood up and turned to be ready. As I turned, a larger buck behind me just walked off over the hill. Had I sat still, it may have come out onto the logging trail...oh well. Anyway, the ugliest of the three bucks decided to investigate the call and came my way. It stopped about 22 yards away broadside, perfectly framed in a hold down through the leaves of a nearby maple. I didn't think about two misses much closer, rather just pulled back and let her fly. I planted a custom tapered cedar shaft with a Hiser broadhead in the boiler room, and the buck didn't make 40 yards. He stayed in the field, made a mad dash about 30-35 yards, stopped to look around, and just fell over. He was probably 2 1/2 years old, had an 11+" right beam, and a 3 point on the left that had a flattened appearance. I only improved next year's genetics!!
God bless, Arch.

Hi Gary,
Congratulations on the buck!
I was out all of October, saw quite a few deer, but wasn't able to get that "perfect" shot. Scott put an end to my deer hunting last weekend -- guess it is only right with the baby due in about 2 and 1/2 weeks!
Take care,
Christi

Hi Gary,
Congratulations on your buck!
It's good to see your post on the MTB thread, Christi told me you did, so I had to check it out. I have been seeing a lot of bucks but no luck yet. I am having a great time. Hey maybe you could tell us about your hunt in our Traditional Trails Magazine.
See Ya Scott

Bishs,
Photos should be developed soon.
The story is a good lesson but the shot choice was poor.
This does make five deer/years in a row with this bow.
I have been meaning to send a check to MTB. I will try to dig up the registration form on Monday when I return from the last hunt before gun season.

I notice our Join MTB button at the top of this forum is pointing to the wrong page -- Sorry for the inconvience.

This has been the best and worst season I have ever had. I've hunted hard for 25 days, and only had one opportunity for a shot, which I blew. It has been the complete opposite of last year, when I could have arrowed 7 of 8 eight bucks I saw. I guess I should not complain about a season that I have had 25 hunts so far. I'm just getting the itch to make my first "traditional" kill.
Being new to the longbow, I was wondering if anybody else feels more comfortable and is more accurate shooting from a treestand than they are from the ground? My accuracy is twice as good from a stand. Anybody else?
I SHOOT MUCH BETTER FROM A TREE STAND THAN THE GROUND ALSO, I DID MANAGE TO MAKE MY FIRST LONGBOW SHOT INTO A KILL, IT WAS A 4 POINT BUCK WITH A 14 INCH SPREAD. I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT IT WAS THE MOST EXCITING AND INVIGIRATING EXPERIENCE WITH A BOW EVER!
