Outside of Ieatantlers, this year has been dismal in the fact I have not seen one collar.

Most years by this time, I have seen 4-8 collars typically orange while out scouting.

Anyone seeing collars?

I heard that the DNR stopped putting collars on geese because they said it made them easy targets which makes sense. But yea Ive seen two so far both orange in the same flock about a week ago. Im in Macomb County.

All of the (neck) collaring programs that I'm aware of for our flyway are done.

MDNR hasn't collared in probably 5 years and I think Ohio stopped a couple of years ago. I heard CWS is not doing it anymore either, so all three of our most common collars are now going to be even more of a prize!

Indiana hasn't done it forever (red/white)

~~~
just a side note: the colors used for our flyway are not necessarily unique to just us. I know green/white ltrs is being used in the central (colorado)
Speaking of red and white, oh bout 6 years ago we got nine inches of rain leading up to the mid season opener. It flooded a hayfield we could hunt and it was holding around 2000-4000 birds. There was six collars on there the day before opener. 2 Red, 1 Green, 2 Orange, 1 White.
Do you think we held out for one, :dizzy:
I saw one white collar with no leg band while on a bike ride a Mouillee around mid august. Only the second one I ever seen so that was neat for me.
DG,
yeah i had a situation once with a collar as well - just recalled it earlier today in Amenz' thread. (still kinda kickin' myself!)
I think my favorite trophy collars to date would be the atlantic flyway , soft rubber bib style i got out in the maritimes and then the yellow/blk ltr tarsal band from Akimiski Island (NU).
forgot to mention that the east side stands a good chance of picking up these collars in the later part of our early season - molt migrators coming back through. I know of about 4-5 (whites and orange) that got busted just this past (early) season.
I heard they quit putting collars on because they could build up with ice and kill the bird. Whatever the reason is, they are more rare every year and a true trophy. Last one I saw was at a local marina a year ago last summer.
Couple years back I scouted a field/cattle pond that had 6 orange collars on it. Chasin and I hunted it the next day and let at least 250 birds land all around us, waiting for the collars. One snuck in and landed right behind me where I couldn't shoot because of cattle barns. While I was craning my neck looking at the orange collar, Chasin blasts a white collar and drops it on the foot of my blind.
