What is your favorite traditional bow and why? How long is it end to end? How many pounds?

I shoot a Bear Kodiac Magnum. I use it mainly for stalking. Its about a 52" bow with a 55lb. draw as 28".
It's also a southpaw version.

I shoot a 62" Black Widow it is 62lbs @ 28".
it is a beautiful bow, it draws smooth and is real fast. I use it for whitetails.
I also have a 60" "Red River"
Great Plains Recurve, it is 52lbs @ 28", I use it for shooting rabbits in the winter.
Like most Traditional Bowhunters, I have become attached to my bows, and it would be hard to ever part with them. When I shoot they feel like an extension of my arm.

I have a Martin Dream Catcher. It is 58 inches and 60 pounds. I wanna hunt with is soooo bad, but am just not sure. I'll probably go out stalking with it. If I get a buck early on with my compound, I may try to use the recurve for a doe. If all I am seeing is doe, I may decide to try taking a doe with the recurve. <----<<<

Steve,
Welcome to traditional archery! It seems that anyone who gives it a try gets hooked. I have a few bows, but my favorite is my Black Widow. It's 56" and 45#'s @ 25" - my draw length. The longer your draw length, the longer the bow should be (to a point of course). Short bows cause finger pinch if you have a long draw. Also, if you already shoot a compound, go 10 to 15 #'s less draw weight for a recurve or longbow. Hope this helps a little.

Well I thought this post would drum up some discussion. After playing with my boys recurve, I really got the itch to maybe try one myself. It just seems so natural.

I'll be hunting with a 67"ntn #45 @ 28" ash selfbow. I built it along with a few others this year. I have been practicing with it since June. I'm a little disappointed in my shooting ability with it. I group them out to 15 yds. My opening day spot only allows for close shots so it will be the bow I go into the woods with. I've really missed still hunting with my old Bear Grizzley bow. This is a huge change from my Darton compound @ #73. Good-bye to good groups at forty Yds. Hello to a new way to enjoy a day in the woods.
Good hunting to all

Sounds like something I'm going to have to try. Going to have to start lobbying for the money now. How much do these bows cost. What broadheads do you shoot with them?

Steve, I have six Magnus 125's 2 blades that shave hair, ready to go. I have a 2"x3" spot above my wrist shaved clean to prove it! I used my Lansky to sharpen them with.

I use the Lansky on the Nuge as well (same blade basically), but am never completely satisfied with their sharpness. Can't use the the lowest angle because the broadhead itself gets in its way.

I can't just use the Lansky. You create a burr on the edge of your blade with your sharpening stones. Then you must get rid of the burr. There are a couple different ways to remove the burr. I straup the blade with leather.
Then again some people prefer the edge you get from a file. It's a different kind of sharp. They both work.

Where do you buy, and what is a leather straup?

That's one of those things that used to hang from the barbers chair when they used to shave mens faces with a single edged razor.
I just use the backside of an old belt.
There is a thousand ways to sharpen a blade.
I have only been using Lansky for the last two years. The advantage of using it for me has been once I get an angle on my knife or blade it resharpens Lickety-split.(Is that a word?).
Good Luck

I tried the back of an old belt and you are right it gets those broadheads scary sharp. I ordered a commercial strop mounted on a board with some compound to put on the leather. Can't wait to get that.

I shoot a Martin Bushmaster Long Bow. It's 64" long and shoots 50# at 28". I draw 29.5". It retails at approx. $350-375.00 .
It's the nicest bow that I've ever shot. Smooth and easy. As natural as tossing a stone.

I shoot a RH version of Oct. 1. A Bear Kodiak Magnum 52" long that shoots 55# at 28". I don't think I will ever hunt with anything else. It is small, it is light, I usaually never hang it up while on stand.
Steve,
Try E-Bay for bow price education. It doesn't take long to find out what a good bow is worth and what the good bows are. Every time I check out E-Bay bows, the guys that know a good bow have already driven the price up to the limit.
