Guys, go to my photo gallery and take a look at this ice fishing rod I got at a Flea Market up in Lansing for a buck! It appears to be an original unit with about a 4 foot rod. I can't figure out how to upload the photo.
The reel has a patent number and I have never seen one like it. It looks and feels like something from the 1950's.
I am going to use it this winter just for nostalgia sake. The reel has a spring loaded sliding pin that holds it in place so it will not turn. I assume it is very easy to slide off if you hook a large fish. I'm wondering if it was meant for Walleyes. It is kind of a metal Schooley reel that is much simpler and stronger (I don't care for Schooleys). This is the coolest Ice fishing piece I have found so far in my long career. :fish2:
Does anyone know anything about it?

I too looked at his gallery. There's only one photo in there. If you read his post he says "I can't figure out how to upload the photo". I'm assuming that he was able to upload before but since the forum upgrade he hasn't figured out how to upload a photo. I will admit that sometimes after these forum upgrades it takes a while to learn how to do things again.

You paid a buck for that! Good find, I would bet that reel will freeze. If it were mine I would just hang it on a wall.

I think I will use it on the non-freezing days.

Holy Cow!! That picture made me go to the shed and double check, yep, I've had one for years. Never had a problem with freezing if memory serves. I'll snap a shot of it tomarrow and open a gallery.

Never saw one of those reels. Is the rod fiberglass? I have a couple old steel rods, not sure of age.

I think those reels are still made, they have been around a long time,we put them on cane poles, and ice rods,,here is one one a 1925 rod I have no idea when my grandfather put it on,,I have some newer ones on my Ice rods up at the lake,,

that handle is mahogany and is done on a lathe then hand carved as you can see the irregular shape to handle cuttings and rod is a fiberglass blank with the eyes attached buy hand as you can see the glass irregularities ,so it is my guess it was redone by someone

My brother and I have been iceing for over fifty years > We have seen it all I think ! The rell as some have already said has been around for a very long time ! The rod looks like a custom rod that has been out a long time also and is still available ! I have one that is similar but set up for jigging . i use a spining reel on it !!! hope this helps

Guys,
I just looked at it more closely and it is a fiberglass rod that looks original. It does not appear to be redone at all. Like I said before I will use it this winter for nostalgia's sake and I think it has a fifties look and feel to it. It could be much older I guess. It is just a cool set-up. I have seen lots of ice gear but not one like this. Which of you could pass this up for a buck? I'm glad to see others have these.
Gull, I'm still around and looking forward to more discussions this winter.
I know you love Schooleys and a handful of others do too. I like being able to fight a big Bass or Pike for a few seconds when they take my Bluegill bait. I lose 3 or 4 jigs a Winter to big fish, some emovable until they take off for deeper water. How cool is that when you hook something that feels like a stump and then starts moving? I hate to lose a jig that costs a buck. Shows how cheap I am I guess.
I bought some new Shad Darts the other day, I am truly a sick twisted freak about Ice Fishing.

Jpollman, Thanks again! You are the best. This is the Patent page:
http://www.google.com/patents?id=XpZhAAAAEBAJ&pg=PA1&dq=1827488&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=2
It was applied for the year I was born, 1947 and issued in 1952. Man I'm a good guesser!
