I just bought this old recurve for my son. Had no string. Anybody know what string it would need and where I can get one?

Does anybody make or sell such a string?

Well Steve, I have been waiting to see if anyone had an answer for ya. Since there are none, I'll tell you what I would do. Loop a string (soft cotton will do) on the lower limb. Holding the upper limb in your right hand (and being careful not to twist) bend the limbs. At the same time have someone measure the brace height. When you get to seven or seven and a half inches, the length of string from limb-tip to limb tip should be a good lenght for you to start with. I'd go with the seven inch brace height and adjust it higher by twisting the string if needed. You can buy the string at most any archer shop, just tell em the length o string and poundage of the bow. Let me know if this works? Good luck. <----<<<

Hi Steve
The string you need is going to be approx. 45 inchs long , that should give you a brace of 7" at least thats the way it seems to work. You have to be careful as most archery shops are set up for compound users and have little exp. with sticks and strings.
have fun with the bow

Ok, stupid question from a compound bow hunter, but what is brace?

Brace Height on any bow (compound or traditional) the distance from your string to the furthest point foreward on the back side of your riser or grip. Generally, less brace height is faster, while more yeilds better forgiveness.
Basically, you want to start with a brace height that is a bit too low. Do not put any silencing material on the bow, and let the string stretch out for a few days. When you shoot, it should be loud and shocky to your bow hand. As you twist the string (clockwise) you will increase brace height to a point where the bow will become MUCH quieter, and feel smooth to your bow hand (less hand shock). You want to find the spot where it changes from loud to quiet. This is called the "sweet spot" of your bow. Measure the brace height, and string length and write them down...it will be the same for the life of your bow.<----<<<

Steve, I had to edit the pot above. It now says "...furthest point foreward ON THE BACK SIDE of your riser..." <----<<<

Get a back up string Steve, you may lose the original one sometime or it may get damaged.
Have fun and enjoy the new found sport of stick and string!
LOL - this is cool! Good for you Steve! Sorry I did not see this sooner as someone I know came to mind right away for your string needs but I am sure Toby from Grand River Bows can help you out as well - he is a great guy who btw, makes a great bow as well.
