I am not sure how late your talking about. I like to have my stands hanging several weeks prior to the opener, but I hunt a lot of different stands, and I keep moving them as the season progresses and rut nears.
I try to do it as undetected as possible, I like to hang them soon after there bedded in the morning so my scent has time to diminish before they pass through.
I also like to hang them during or before a rain to cover my scent.

As long as you are far enough away from a bedding area, hang the stand. Still sneak in around noon, hang it quietly, and sneak out. Wear rubber boots and use ALOT of scent eliminator to cover perspiration scent. Bottom line, you might just be a racoon? <----<<<
