Apple trees, not pple trees! Sorry about the thread title, I guess I can't edit that , eh?
I want to plant some apple trees on my property in the UP for wildlife purposes. Not an orchard, just a couple of trees. I know nothing about planting things:confused:. Any species types, hints, books, or other resources to suggest?

Get some 4-6in. corregated black flexible drain pipe. At least 2 feet tall. Cut it length way and then put it around the trunk. Leave it until the tree almost fills it. Probably a few years or so. This will keep the rabbits at bay.
Deer may eat the tops tho.

I've had good luck by digging a mote around them and filling the mote with hungry pitbulls!
Honestly i am going to do this next season as well and I learned the hard way that the deer ate all my maples and oaks i planted. I am going to get some chain link fencing for the apple trees and use that to ward off deer, if you go on Craigslist there is always someone trying to get rid of chain link.
Let me know what you try and if it works for you.

I planted some oaks and maple downstate. Have rabbit and deer problems too. I put a 12" piece of 4" non corrugated pipe (like Walleye Mike said) over the bottom for the bunnies and to keep the deer away I drove 3 fence posts in a triangle around the tree then wrapped them with a 20' section of chicken wire. 2 years not and no problem.

If you want to plant trees and keep them from the wild animals, do figure on fencing them. The good news is that many times you can just circle the tree with snow fencing, unless you have elk in the area.
If you fence all the trees with only one fence, then you will have to go to a higher fence to keep the deer out. We had good luck for many years with only a 4' fence and then a strand of electric fence wire about 6" above that fence. It kept the deer at bay. Our old fence petered out so now we put up a 5' fence.

I had figured that fencing was a must!
