I have a bear recurve that is only a 40# draw. Is this practical to deer hunt with? Would it make a difference if i were in a tree stand or on the ground?

Judohunter, 40 pounds is probably adequate to kill a deer. The 40# label most likely means 40 pounds at 28 inches. If your draw length is shorter then you are shooting less than 40 pounds. So first check your drawlength, and if possible check the bow weight on a scale at that length. If you are at 40 pounds, just match your arrow spine with your broadhead weight. Try to use a 2 or 3 blade head and go light. For example Thunderhead 85's may be an option.
http://www.edersbow.com/catalog/easton_chart.htm will help you with arrow selection. Also, I would hunt from a tree and limit your shots to 10 - 15 yards max. Good luck! <----<<<

40# with a 2 blade broadhead will work fine. You might want to look at grizzly broadheads, they are supposed to be one of the best for penetration.

My son got two lungs and the heart with an exit hole. He was shooting under #40. The trouble with light weight bows and treestands is that it is important to get two holes in your deer. Many times the entrance hole is high on the deer and sometimes bleeds less outside the cavity of the deer. Accurate up close shots will eliminate that problem.

Good hunting to all
