anyone here use ice saws. I have been thinking about getting one and was just wondering if they were useful enough to justify carrying something else out onto the ice.

I only bring out the ice saw when I am spearing, it works great, but not necessary for strictly ice fishing. Just more to carry in the sled.

I got one last year for my shanty and love it. Cuts thick ice great. Highly recommended for big shanty holes. I wouldn't haul it out if I was just fishing panfish with auger holes.

How tough is it getting the hole "started", and what do you do with the block of ice? Shove it under the hole or try and pull it out,, is that a pain in the ass??

I take my 4 inch auger and drill the corners then cut the ice out like in two triangles and pull the blocks out. If I shove it under the ice, it can be a big hazard for an unaware ice angler and takes more time for the hole to refreeze without the blocks going back in. We mark the spearing hole as well. If I were to shove it under the ice and a pike that is cruising just under the ice, it can get that pike to angle off and I may miss a spearing chance. I use my auger and spud to pull it out, gonna pick up a pair of ice tongs this year, be alot easier.

I got one last season and was impressed on how well it cut a spearing hole. Im thinking about getting the short saw now for reopening the hole in the shanty. It can be done with the long saw but its dificult to manuver inside the shanty.

I bought one last year also. I went with the longer vs the shorter version. I spear out of a portable shanty and have delt with the chainsaw and spud. Legs on my coveralls use to get soaked with spray then freeze stiff . Then theres the oily film left on the surface.

I drill a hole with my auger and start my first cut from there. I go a bout 48 inches then cut my radius corner and go a bout 24 in then another radius corner then run 48 hit the last radius cut and saw the 24 inch cut ending up back where I started.

I also carry oak branches in my sled and mark my hole good when I pack up and leave.

I have one as well. Cuts like a knife in butter.

I don't know. But, I'd just like to ask that everyone mark there holes so other anglers/ people/ kids don't fall thru.

I'd place the chunk of ice on top of the ice, that makes a decent marker along with a tree branch.

Have ya ever hit a chunk of ice with a sled or quad? :yikes:
I'd like to get one of those saws, but can't justify the cost.

Ya! that's why you should also mark it with a tree branch.

I always put the ice block in the hole and put pine limbs in it so they stick up 4 feet up saw people put nothing in it

I mark mine also, There aint no feeling like getting to a lake just before dawn, walking across 16" of ice with 4" of fresh snow on top only to step in a shanty hole. wakes you up real quick.

i love the ice saw. to get the block out i screw 2 ice anchors into the ice where the block will be before i cut it. then just lift it out when i'm done cutting. works great.

i also auger only 2 holes diagonally and cut at 90 degree angles from them....

Like this. With the x being the ice anchors i screw in (by hand). Ignore the . in the middle row. Forum wouldn't let me post multiple spaces in a row for some reason.
