Vexilar, LCD Graphs, it all has to do with Sonar, they work off sound waves.

All this reading about sonar has me asking more questions.

The speed of sound in the air is about 1,100 feet per second. I read that in the water it is 4,800 feet per second. Why such an increase?

Anyone???

The speed of sound is about four times faster in water than in air.

How do I know this.......I don't. I found out about it here.... www.hypertextbook.com/facts/2000/NickyDu.shtml

Water is MUCH more dense than air. That is why sound carries so much faster through water than air.

The dencer the medium the faster it travels . So sound moves faster in water than air. Sound travels at 330 meeters per second . Information found on... www.lunaticantics.com/andyslater/tutorials/sound.html :)

I see said the blind man. I see that it says sound is slowed by colder temps. So let me get this staight. Sound travels faster in water, we know that. But how far does a particlar sound travel in water?

If you are asking what particular sound travels farthest in water, the answer might amaze you.

Whales can make sounds in frequency ranges that are undetectable by the human ear, yet are heard by other whales hundreds of miles away. Some scientists say they can communicate over thousands of miles.

While wales communicate at very high frequencies, the U.S. Navy talks to their subs at extremely low frequencies.

Modern subs are equiped with antennas that are not much more than cables trolled behind the vessel that when in use extend for about a mile. These are VLF (Very Low Frequency) antennas that operate on a wavelength that is also undetectable by the human ear.

This system is capable of reaching every sub on the globe.

That's ELF, extra low frequency. The antennas are in the U.P. and northern Wisconson.

I must have been viewing a discovery channel documentary on U.S. Navy Submarines. The submarine needs to be built stealthy meaning virtually invisiable by sound . The rear propeller is scientificaly designed so that when it rotates it hardly makes any noise or sound when propelling water.I feel that the sport of fishing and the science of oceanography has alot of similiarities.:p

Yea, we spent untold Millions developing that technology. Then in our infinite wisdom we had the Japanese build the machine tools to make the propellers. Being the good Allies they are, they promptly sold the technology to the Russians...

Esox your right about what you said about Japan . What I think is weird is that I can't find a true picture on the web of a modern day submarine prop.I have a design in my mind to make quiter running trolling motors so that fishermen and fisherwomen.Hmmm sorry to get off the topic but we need to get politically correct with the term ... Fishermen... alot of women fish too ! I think there needs to be a name change :p Well back to the topic I think that Stelth is the WORD of the DAY! Write me back lets join forces ...you too Ladies ... and lets come up with some ideas and see where we go.:p
