I found these pulling in the driveway tonite. Found under a White oak.

Nice hens wintrrun!
The only thing to consider is if tree is growing next to a treated lawn,
they should probably be avoided as far as edibility.

Looking at your profile, it states you are an arborist,
and have a question maybe you could answer.
Hen of the woods cause a white rot to live trees, and
was wondering if that could kill a tree.
I know Chicken of the woods causes a brown rot and is known
to be a tree killer, but not sure about hens.

To be honest the only mushrooms I have ever ran across that were Tree Killers were the Armillaria or Honey's.
Not yet run across Hens or Chickens that killed off a particular tree.
That White Oak I found those under have been producing Hens for over 20 years ( according to a neighbor ) and for the 13 I have run them over with the Lawn Mower:dizzy::yikes::rant:. I have not noticed any changes yet in the health of that tree.
I'll pull out a couple of books this weekend and do some reading and let ya know what i come up with.

Thanks..I'd be interested in what you find.

On chicken of the woods that grow at the base of oaks.
they are known to cause a brown rot and will cause
the tree to break off at the base in a big wind.
How many years? No telling.
The kicker is there is often not much visible damage
to the tree prior to falling over.
I had a buddy lose one in his yard from one and seen
one at the park this happened to.
The one at the park looked good too, but the damage
on the interior at the base after it fell was pretty impressive.

The hen is supposedly parasitic. I guess that does not mean it will necessarily kill the host tree. I find quite a bit more around live then dead trees, not sure what that means exactly but that is the case FWIW.
