My buddy who is a Detroit cop had a call last week for a "mad dog" on Radner and East Warren, when they arrived on the scene they came upon a whitetail buck (8pt still in velvet)in an old womans back yard!!!! He called his supervisor who told him to immediately dispatch the deer. With his trusty 40 cal in hand he put a bead on the deers shoulder and let go 2 rounds. The deer hopped the fence and ran 3 houses down and laid down on another old ladies front lawn. The supervisor showed up and so did the mad dog which was also dispatched using the 40 cal. I have lived in Detroit for 50+ years and have never heard of anything like this before. If you guys think I am BSing, pm me your phone # and I will forward the picture to post. Al :tdo12:

ummm...do you have trail cam pics of said buck or mad dog? If not, may want to move this to sound off or main deer page.

This doens't surprise me I grew up in Ferndale and remember seeing pics of a buck that was dispatched in Hazel Park because it was stuck in a back yard. My grandma used to live in Royal Oak and right across the street were train tracks where we saw a couple of deer time to time walking down the tracks.

Couple weeks ago a doe jumped the barrier on the Woodward service drive south of 696 onto the pavement below. Her fawn didn't take the leap and ran back into the neighborhood

Doesn't surprise me. I see them all the time in and around the city. There was a very nice buck running the rouge river around 696/Telegraph area a few years ago.

Not surprised either. I saw an absolute giant a few years ago at the corner of 8 mile and Telegraph wondering around that old golf course.

I work at Telegraph and 12 mile, and I have seen a few nice bucks in the neighborhoods around there. Just saw 6 does today! have seen a couple nice 8 points, and a couple smaller 8's and 6's as well. Sometimes you have to stop the car to let them cross!!!!

That doesn't surprise me. I've seen quit a few pheasants in the hood just south of Children's hospital, so seeing a deer down there seems possible too.

The pheasants are everywhere. You just gotta make sure you shoot the right gang colors though....dont want any retaliation.

Comedian on comedy central the other night was talking about what a S*&$ hole Detroit is and was saying that bears are gentrifying the city. Maybe there the next. I can only imagine that 911 call. :dizzy:

Is that a dead dog next to the deer, if so I think this pic is entirely inappropriate for this website. Anybody that shoots someone elses dog deserves the same fate in my book. Stupid Detroit cops shooting deer and dogs in peoples back yards, just about the standard I would expect in the D, and exactly the reason I moved out 17 years ago. IDIOTS.

Not really a suprise to me. the rouge river is a block away from my house and i would always go down there with friends looking around and stuff. We have saw deer (bucks and does), pheasants, coyotes, and fox all along the river.

The reason the dog was shot is because it had attacked 2 kids and an adult, the deer just happened to show up at the same time. Sorry if anyone is offended by the photo. Al:help:

Pit bulls should be shot but not sure why you need to shoot the deer.

Apparently you haven't met some of the dogs in Detroit....

The need to kill the Buck??? They really are everywhere. However shooting a stray dog in the inner city is totally different than shooting a farm dog or a hunting dog. The dogs in the city develope packs and they are not affraid of people. God help the little kid that gets scared and runs from them. Loose dogs in the city are a plague and there aren't enough resources to handle them differently. Besides which the animal (by State Law) should not be loose, unattended, or off leash. Now throw into that mix, that the animal has probably never seen a Vet for vaccinations and you have a public health hazzard. I think the Police handled it to the best of the options they had available. JMHO FRANK

UncleClassness...thanks for doing such fine job of being judge jury and executioner...DO YA really think some police officer is just going to randomly put bullet holes into someones dog for pure fun?

Not just deer. A buddy saw a coyote with a rabbit in its mouth at 12 Mile and Southfield last fall.

What about the state cops last year in the Cheboygan area (I think Cheboygan) that poached a deer using a spot light while on duty? At least the Detroit cops were shooting animals due to the command their superior gave them. I don't recall the state troopers being told to shoot the deer they did.

Agree! But...that's apparently exactly what the cop did with the deer. What purpose did it serve? Who was endangered? What life-threatening danger did the deer pose?

If this story is true, and if the police office did shoot this deer while no one was threatened (even if it was in someone's yard in the city limits) then both the officer and the person who gave the order to shoot the deer should be immediately suspended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

LEOs around here won't even put down an injured deer - let alone shoot a healthy one. I would think that an officer in the city would have a much higher standard of discharging his weapon than we do in the rural areas.

First, I don't know the area where the deer was located. But lets say police watched the deer run onto a major road and cause a crash or hit a vehicle. Then people will get hurt. That is way when a deer is within city limits they are shoot and kill.

I have observed a deer run onto I-75 within city limits cause a crash then strike a vehicle going 70mph with officers looking on. So you tell me what should be done. The deer isn't possessing a threat to anyone one minute then can cause a dangerous crash and kill someone.
