I have a small 14ft aluminum boat. When we were in Canada, I borrowed a friends fish finder and it worked great. My boat is too small for anything permanent. Would like to buy one, but know nothing about them. Looking for any recommendations. Also any features that are a "must have". Thanks in advance for any help.

I've had an Eagle 6200z portable for years and it's work great. The only problem I've had was the transducer was held on by a suction cup and would come off at anything above trolling speed. I had to make a mounting brackett.

I bought a second suction cup and made (out of 1/4" canvas phenolic) a plate that when the water would pull on the bottom ,( there were some 1/4-20 bolts with tee-nuts & heatshrink tubing mouted thru the plate) it would tilt a little & press the bolts up top against the transom , converting the pull almost straigh back on the suction cup and preventing them from "peeling" off , I've had it running flat out on a GLS195 SeaNymph 19'er with a 80 HP Mariner flat out & it stayed put!!
BIG rooster-tail off the mount though!!!
Pulling straight back the cups stay put pretty good!:D :D

I had an old 12 # elect trolling motor go south on me .
And got a great idea , I mounted the transducer of my eagle on the (cut off ) shaft. Makes it very portable, clamp it on the back of which ever boat I'm in , mine or my brothers. Even on a bucket for ice fishing. Not a vexilar but a great depth finder.
