I love using my crock pot. In the early afternoon, I love to throw in a venison roast or an elk roast... use about a cup of water - a little salt/pepper - peel a few potatos and carrots... cut up a small onion. Let it cook while I do what I need to do around the house. It will cook for about 4-5 hours on high. You do not need to do anything to it while it cooks. Come dinner time, a super dinner that seems like it must have taken so much effort... but, little do they know. ;)

Hope,

Back on 10/5 I posted a "Crock-pot Venison Steak" recipe that you might look at. I agree, the crock-pot is excellent. However, my preferrence is still the Dutch Oven. Basically, I like good tasting food so that is what I do.

I think I need a dutch oven. :) I have never tried anything made from the dutch oven. Hey, lets all have a get together - we can all bring a dish to pass. :D

The crock pot is going almost 24 hours a day when we are at deer camp. Nothing like it. Plug it in when you get up. Have a nice meal when you get in after hunting.

Our deer camp is somewhat more primitive that having a place to plug in a crock-pot. We do have a gas stove that is used for cooking and heating.

I think that the Dutch Oven used on very low heat, may have been a predicessor to the Crock Pot. When By leaving our gas stove on pilot and placing the Dutch Oven on the top grate, it will slowly cook over a 6 to10 hour period - accomplishes the same thing as a slow-cooking Crock-pot.

However, a crock pot is good for when we want to come home to a hot dinner after being out x-c skiing all day - or when coming home from work.

Basically, the goal is excellent food - however it is prepared. We have some wild game recipe's that are supurb - and prepared totally in the Micro.

That is what is so unique about this web site. It is a place for all of us to share our unique way of doing our favorite outdoor activities.

If you've got some particualr recipe's that are vavorites, please share them with us.

We cooked a roast in our crockpot(a biggie) yesterday and it was excellent. We started off by putting some slits in the roast and stuffing some garlic in. Then, we sprinkled a 1/2 packet of beef seasoning from Ramin noodles on top. We then packed it with red potatoes, lots of onions, baby carrots, and about 2 cups of water. Cooked it on low for about 7 hours and enjoyed it when we returned from hunting.

I was prepared to use the carving knife but it wasn't necessary it was so tender. Used a little apple butter BBQ sauce for dipping! :corkysm55

Try adding Campbells Golden Mushroom soup instead of water. Cooked a venison roast with all the goodies yesterday, the soup adds a pretty unique flavor, unfortunately when you can find it, it is about $1.49 per can.

No knife needed, just fell apart. :)

I also use CGMS with venison stew. It is also excellent with elk roast's, etc. :p

I've only prepared a beef roast since i live on a beef farm and all the deer we take we make into steaks, ground, and jerky...when i cook the beef roast i just throw it in the crock with a can of coke (the acid tenderizes the meat and keeps it juicy) can you do the same thing with venison? i have heard to place bacon strips on top of a venison roast too

I have been hooked on these cheaper cuts, I think it was called a London Broil, I will check tomorrow when I pick one up. Anyhow, I brown it good and cook it with the base veggies, carrots, celery, onion, garlic and potatos. When it gets to the poing of almost falling apart, I make a little gravy up from the sauve and make a little plate of it and set the rest aside to cool. The next day or later in the night depending on how things go, I add a little BBQ sauce to the meat and some balsomic vinegar and hot sauce and toss it on a bun and use up the rest that way, MMmmmm good stuff.

Dutch ovens are great, I've been using one since I was in Boy Scouts.

One day I was making some apple cabbler in the dutch over, dug a hole in the ground and put coals on the bottom and on the lid, put the dirt over that and went hunting. Didn't see anything until I got back to camp and a nice 5 point buck was digging at the ground where my dutch oven was.

I love my slow cooker as well, being a single guy, I use it all of the time.
