cannot get a hit on my riggers, have no problem being successful on the core and dipsys every trip but my riggers are stinking up the joint.
i run braid on my core rods, is this hampering me? i have tried many different lead lengths on the riggers with no success.
was wondering if the braid is affecting the lure action? have no other reason as to why i cannot get a hit on the riggers.

I found that braid has un - equal diameter and flat spots that make a LOT of noise in the water, try switching to a quality Mono , see what happens.

if the braid is the problem can i just run a long mono leader?

I would run a flouro leader. I'd stick with the mono unless you are deep fishing with riggers down 100 feet or more. John King has a few rigger tips that work for running baits on riggers deep.... Click the link for the tip..

Theres a few paragraphs of info. When trolling deep for king with riggers try trolling with the current and waves. This will make the lines have less drag and the lines will run straighter. This is a good way to cover more water and catch more fish in a shorter period of time. I guess that power pro braided line is rounder than fireline so that may work better but you should run a flouroleader like P-line or Seaguar and use about 10 -15 feet of it at the end.
Downsizing the cable on the rigger itself is mentioned. Somewhere in the he mentions what kind of cable they are using. Some have used the heavy braided line, but I guess this thinner rigger cable does wonders too. But than again I've seen some guys have the drag so bad its almost at a 45 degree angle maybe more and they still pop fish...

Hey Pikenetter, is this a problem you have been experiencing for awhile or just last few days. Cause My riggers were off the hook before a week ago, But I haven't had a hit in the last four days of fishing on my riggers. If so, I think its the calm seas and not a lot of up and down movement.

no, i have not had a hit on riggers at all this year. get plenty of fish on the core and dipsy. will try the mono leader as i am stripping off my expensive braid because i use these rods for walleye also.

When trolling the big lake, any rod that you have braid on should have a mono leader going to the bait. Do not tie braid directly to your bait. The water is clear and that braid stands out like rope. Braid on your rigger rods is fine, you don't have to strip it all off. Just tie on about 50' of mono leader and you are good to go. Personally, I run mono on all rigger rods, with the exception of a couple that are reserved for fishing deep.

If you're running electric DR's you might have a problem w/ stray voltage. Double check and make sure all your ground connections are clean and tight, especially your common ground block.

Definately a leader, but wherever you heard pp is rounder, thats not true. Look close at them both, I tried pp for a few years, and went back to fireline. Its much smoother. jmo.

Martin may of hit it.....
Last year, I did some studies on a few boats about stray voltage leakage thru the cables. My boat was right at the acceptable levels, so was my neighbors. I had Brett (Bdwalk) bring his boat over has he was having the same issue that you are having. His voltage leaks were off the chart. We ended up putting his boat into my garage and spent 2 weeks rewiring the entire boat.....seriously, every connection and I mean every one from speakers to fuel tank sending units were soldered and wrapped in shrinkwrap.
We got his leakage with in tolorances and he now has his riggers on fire.
I can say this....I have fished with Brett prior to doing this and we would go blank or 1-2 fish and not a bite on the rigger. After, he is lighting them up and most recently he did a 14 for 19 day. Most on the riggers. In our overhaul, we actaully found a stray ground from the battery laying inthe bilge. Do some research on Rigger stay voltage and you would be surprised.
What I have found---- dont just twist the wires and wrap them intape....Solder the connection and shrink tube it.
clean up the wire harness......Only use what needs to be there.
Use fuses and pay attention to wire size for each application
Hope this helps. Do a volt Amp test on your rigger cables and that may give you the answer.

So this stray voltage problem is not confined to boats w/electric dr's? I have manual Cannon's, only 2. Aluminum boat. 2 Lowrance sonar/gps's and a marine radio. Not marking many at all this year. Dont want to go out again til they come in closer, waste of time. I could count on at least 1 salmon per trip last season, not this year. Wondering if this voltage thing could be it....

Here's an easy way to do the voltage test(link below)with a volt meter, very interesting and helpful if your DR are not producing. Good Luck and hope this helps.

Did you check yours Larry? Are you going to get back out again? If not, and want to do some shore casting, I'll let you know when the eyes show up in B.C.

I haven't ck'd mine this year, but I did last year and was within the specs listed. I like to ck it every year, but keep forgetting my meter.
I hope to get out and try for some walleye/perch on the bay and would really like to get into some casting when they show up in the river.
