Hey all... I have been thinking of running up to Manistee forrest to do some hunting there.. but not sure of what kind of forrest they have there (tree wise).
Also another place to go would be Pictured rocks national forrest... I read they have a birch forrest there... (perfect for boletes)

What do you guys think?

Things are so much more complex here in the states...
Im originally from Russia, and I remember.. we just went in the woods...
Browned capped boletes were King boltetes which grew under pines... Black capped ones were the ones that grew under birch trees and red capped ones grew under aspens.

Here.. on the east coast at least... It really matters what trees build up the forrest... from what it looks like.

But anyways... let me know what you guys think.

Thanks...

Alex

Hi Alex
Sounds like a fun trip for sure!
I think a call to the closest DNR field office might help
with the various tree types in each area.
Getting the timing right could be difficult imo.

Just looking at your nice bolete pictures, it looks like you are already
in a great area for boletes.
What section of the state are you in?

Best trees for the different boletes for Michigan imo are Oaks, Aspens
and any type of pine with spruce being prime habitat
for kings.

As much as you like to hunting boletes you might want to get
this book sometime.
Half the fun of hunting shrooms to me is just trying to
put a name to the different ones ,which is easier said than done. lol
