Im hoping but not if sure its an edible, see alot of different pic's of boletes, and there seems to be different colors phases to them, here and say Europe, dunno dont see anything like it in my Audubon book?

Hey bd
I'm not familiar with either but it looks like
the last ones could be the spotted which is this one.

A spore print of each would help to get a closer ID though.

Guess im steering clear of the spotted boletes, i picked too. mine are identical to BD's and i dont see that much similarity in the link you supplied...

Spore Print on the Big Bolete is OLIVE BROWN, Stem is reticulate near cap apex also white near cap, brown on main stem body and HOLLOW tho is could be the bug's that did that!? spore surface sunkin around stem brusing yellowish brown, Seems to follow the KING more then anything!
What is KOH, and will that help determine if this is a KING?

Welcome to the frustrating world of Boletes gentlemen.
PWOG...pics can be deceiving at times.
Check out all the images here for just B. Edulis.
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rlz=1T4ADBF_enUS322US323&um=1&q=Boletus+edulis&sa=N&start=0&ndsp=20

BD...here's a good read on what koh is, but I think
just the ammonia test is easier.
Check out the part about bolete frustration. lol

BD I don't think that is a king, the stems are generally
lighter in color and the reticulation is
usually more pronounced.
There are some that look close but taste just as
good imo.
And I agree the bugs probably hollowed out the stem.

Both seem to follow the "Edibility rules of Boletes",
and if so, should be safe try a small amount sometime
and see if you like them and are not allergic to them.

One thing I'll add is keep an eye on the color changes
of the pores from young to old, since this can be an
important key on some of them.

At first glance I'd have thought Tylopilus due to the apparent brown staining, but w' an olive brown print and what else you statd I'm stumped. Might be one of the Summer "kings". Definitely not Boletus edulis var. edulis.

Checked the big bolete again today, the spore surface is still white, with a few lite brownish stains, but the flesh has not stained, overall its wrinkling/drying out now, I cant/wont take any undue risk, Ive been into shrooms this year like never befor so i dont see the need, I have jars of dried morels, bags of chantrels, sweettooths and trumpets for the off season, and lately its usually just a 1/2 hour walk to get plenty fresh pickins for dinner!
So im satisfied with that, now I will however keep a watchfull eye out for those mysterious mitake w.e. A.K.A Hen of the woods? can wait to run into one of those!
