I'm headed up to the alpena area next week for some work. I am looking for a river i can salmon fish in. I will be wading with a fly rod. Anyone have any recommendations?

I haven't been there this summer or heard any reports but you best bet would be the 9th St dam on the Thunder Bay River. You can wade on the side where the parking lot is but the other side is kind of tough to wade. Good luck and post how you do if you got there

I looked up by the Dam with sat photos. Should I bring a spinning rod instead. Any recommendation's on what type of rod and tackle would be apprectiated. I will only be up there for a few hours of fishing, before I have to head back to the Detroit

Personally I would use a spin setup. If you have spawn, try floating that under a bobber or small jigs with wax worms. You can also try casting squids or thundersticks. There is a bait shop pretty much right across the street.

Yes, 9th street is not condusive to throwing flies. Unless you get away from the pack, down by the bridge. BUt even then, its still big waters, and you'd probably be much better suited with a spinning setup.

you can bring the fly rod if you want, I swing flys for steelhead all the time, go on the other side of the bridge, park at the skate park and walk down to the river you can wade out a ways and should be able to cast into the deeper channel in front of the boardwalk! Spinning gear will give you much more options but if you really want to use a fly rod east side of the bridge or hell just chuck n duck where everyone is using spinning gear and if they give you funny looks for doing it ask 90% of them why they are using 50lb test and bare treble hooks and see what they say!! Good luck!!

LOL!!! The classic yellow-rodders, you gotta love it! The best part about it is everytime they hook one, you hear them exclaim, "Fish on! RIGHT IN THE MOUTH!!!"

9th st is a cool place to salmon fish. You can do well on big bags and skein, fished under bobbers or bounced. Wobble glos catch fish there too. Night brings numerous snaggers, especially over on the slack side. Alpena still gets some decent sized kings.
