Understanding that water clarity and pressure play a factor....most of the time do you feel a leader is necessary when casting cranks for salmon or steelies? Do you think running braid directly to a crank is sufficient most of the time, or is a mono or flourocarbon leader necessary? If so, what length leader? Am interested in hearing your opinions particularly if you have tried both and noticed a difference. Feel free to PM.

Never. Those fish don't have time to think about it. They see it, react accordingly and go. Kings aren't exactly line shy when they want to go, regardless of water clarity. Hell, even fishing skein, I've ran a 15# Maxima Leader on a bright bluebird day in the middle of the afternoon and slayed 'em. If running a lure and doing a steady retrieve, the braid is just fine.

I run 6/20 Powerpro straight to the crankbait.

Ya see Hutch, with upland stream trout, which are more selective, picky, finicky, wise, and cunning, one must use finesse tactics such as 4 lb. test mono or a quality flurocarbon such as Umqua...............sorry buddy, I'm ain't resistin' too well this evening.
