I found this today, what I think to be a Hygrophorus Milky. Actullay I found a bunch, but this is the only one I took for ID. Everything leads to the Hygro Milky. Can any of the Milky experts help me out??

LOL@ the Milky Experts RL!
Might have to confer with "Twin Pines" on this one.:)

Yes, looks like the L. Hygo's that I find.
I'll toss in a link for reference.

It's a hygro. I don't know any mycologists on here though:lol:. Just other shroom addicts. They are really good eating though. You won't be disappointed!

I'm no milky expert, :corkysm55 but if it has a peachy color, profuse white milk that don't change colors or stain the flesh, white gills with wide spacing and tastes mild it's a hygro. I'd say 99% that's a hygro.

Lactarius can crossbreed though, so sometimes the traits don't match up 100% and you have to be careful.

It's a good rule to avoid all lactarius that bleed yellow, or have white milk that changes to yellow. All lactarius that bleed orange milk are edible.

Thanks guys, thats what I was hoping to hear. Like I said everything matched up in the Audubon that lead me to think it was a Hygro. One thing that helped narrow it down to the Hygro was the wide distant gills and the non staining milk.

One more question.
Whats the best way to cook these??

They do really well with the butter an onion thing. In an omelete they are REALLY good too!

When I do an omelet with them I just saute the shrooms in butter, then add the eggs, and some shredded cheddar on top. It's honestly all it needs.:)
